Visiting Australia October - December with a baby
Hello! My husband and I from the UK and were planning a trip to Australia with our 4 month old baby. Arriving mid October, leaving early December. I would love some advice on whether this is sensible, and if so, how to manage the sun/heat/UV levels at this time of uear.
Our plan was to travel slowly, visiting Melbourne, the GOR, Sydney and surrounding areas and allowing plenty of extra time for sleeping, chilling out etc.
Having read more into it, and getting lots of advice from Redditers about heat/sun we're now reconsidering it completely. We didn't realise quite how strong the UV levels are at that time of year. The temperatures in Sydney and Melbourne seem ok, but it sounds like we'd have to stay inside between 10-4pm most days to avoid UV levels over 3. Does this sound right?
We understand we'd need to buy UV covers for the pram, UV protective clothing and that there are some sunscreens suitable for babies (Moogoo?!) but most you shouldn't use before 6 months. We'd also need to be cautious of sun even in the shade, on cloudy days, and that reflective UV radiation can still cause severe burns in babies.
Basically I'm wondering from people who have babies and live in Australia full time, whether this all sounds right and whether there's a way to make our trip work. Or whether visiting at this time would be a wasted trip, spent inside, and it would be better to wait and come in May when the UV levels and lower.
