Need Job Search Tips for Switching From IT Analyst Role Back to HR

I did an MBA in HR and got placed right out of campus into a very well-paying Analyst role in IT/process governance. On paper it sounds great, but honestly I feel completely lost.

I come from an HR background and IT is entirely new to me. I’ve been here for 8 months and I constantly feel like my work lacks quality because I’m still trying to understand the systems, terminology, workflows, and expectations. There’s very little guidance and most of the learning is self-driven by observing people around me.

I’ve already spoken to HR internally about switching to an HR role, but I got the standard “stay for a few more months and we’ll keep you in mind when something opens up” response.

Now I’m trying to figure out how to transition externally into HR with only 8 months of experience, while still making decent pay. I also want to move closer to home because the stress and anxiety are getting pretty bad.

My questions:
- How do I position this IT/process experience on my resume for HR jobs?
- What HR roles should I realistically target with 8 months experience?
- Which skills/certifications actually help for a transition?
- Is it better to stay for 1 full year before switching?
- Has anyone here moved from non-HR corporate roles back into HR successfully?

Would really appreciate practical advice or job search hacks from people who’ve navigated something similar.

7 months into my first job….

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working in an IT Process & Governance role. I have an MBA. My work mainly involves governance support, coordination, process-related activities, supporting internal IT initiatives, and gradually getting exposure to areas like license management, contracts, and application portfolio optimization activities.

This is my first job, and I’ve been here for around 7 months. I come from a non-technical background, so I’m still learning a lot on the job and sometimes feel underconfident compared to others around me. I’ve also received feedback that I can appear timid, and I’m trying to improve my communication, confidence, and visibility at work which i have been taught during MBA and i was good at but now i am losing my skills.

I wanted advice on:
- What career paths usually come from IT governance/process roles?
- What skills should I focus on early in my career?
- How can I become more confident and visible in the workplace?
- Would certifications or technical learning help?

Would appreciate honest advice from people working in similar roles.
Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I’m 25 years old and joined a really good company right after my MBA in HR in August 2025. During training, I was excited and happy with my decision, but after being deployed to the IT department, things started becoming overwhelming. I come from a completely non-technical background, and currently work on application portfolio management and a few other projects.

I’ve been trying hard to learn and grow, but lately I’ve been feeling emotionally drained and honestly a bit unworthy. I’ve received feedback that I come across as timid and underconfident, and while I understand that, I also feel it comes from having very limited knowledge about the department and having to start from square one.

I really am trying, but sometimes I feel like I need to do much more to catch up. I’ve looked at other opportunities too, but the job market has been difficult and I’m barely getting callbacks.

A part of me wants to stay and make this work because it’s a good company with good benefits, but right now I just feel stuck, overwhelmed, and alone. Has anyone else gone through something similar early in their career?
