Found a 1942 WWII time-capsule in my 99-year-old Nan's paperwork. An original poem written by an unknown soldier - Windsor, UK. Apologies if posting in the wrong part of the forum, just felt it needed to be read by others.
We are D.R.'s of C. Company,
We will ride and fight,
Until England is free.
Our messages are urgent,
Our bikes are good,
And if God spares us,
When the war is won,
We will ride again
This time for fun.
But if guns roar,
And we are near,
It is time to say goodbye,
To everyone dear.
And if we die put on our graves,
A crash-hat with this sign engraved,
I have done my best,
For all to see,
And down to rest.
Jerry has laid me,
This last wish is all I ask,
Win the war, and then forget the past.
- I recently found this incredibly moving wartime poem sent inside a registered letter postmarked August 25, 1942. I posted the original piece and envelope elsewhere. Many thanks.
