how much did you actually have saved before your first apartment and was it enough or did you just wing it?

I keep seeing wildly different numbers on this. some people say you need 6 months of expenses saved up before you even think about signing a lease, other people say 3 months is plenty, and then there's people in the comments saying they moved out with like 800 bucks and figured it out as they went. for anyone who's actually done this already, what did you really have in the bank when you signed your first lease. and honestly, once you were in it and paying your own bills every month, did it feel comfortable or were you white knuckling it those first few months. i'm not trying to hear the ideal scenario advice, i want to know what it was actually like for real people

How much do you have in savings?

I'm 28 and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed when I think about this stuff. I've got maybe $85k saved up right now ($50k in a brokerage account, $35k in my 401k) and I know that's supposedly "not bad" for my age but it doesn't feel like enough when I look at what I actually need. The thing is I didn't really get serious about any of this until like 3 years ago. Before that I was just spending whatever I made. Now I'm putting away like 15% of my paycheck but sometimes I feel like I'm just throwing money at a problem that's way too big to solve. My coworkers seem way more on top of it than me and honestly it stresses me out. I want to travel more and my car is getting old, probably needs replacing soon. But every time I think about using any of my savings for stuff like that I get anxious about retirement. I don't want to be one of those people scrambling in my 60s. But I also don't want to miss out on actually living my life now while I'm young, you know? I'm trying to find some middle ground but it's harder than I thought it would be. Anyone else dealing with this weird balance between enjoying life now and not totally panicking about the future?

Does anyone actually have an emergency fund or is that just something people say

I see posts constantly about having three to six months of expenses saved and investing every month and building wealth and honestly it makes me feel like i am the only one just trying to make rent on time. I am not out here buying things i do not need or eating out every day, the money just genuinely does not stretch far enough to have anything left over at the end of the month. If my car broke down tomorrow or i had an unexpected medical bill i would genuinely have no idea how to handle it. It feels like financial advice online is written for people who already have a cushion and just need to optimize it, not for people who are starting from zero with nothing to work with. Is anyone else actually in this situation or does everyone online really have their stuff together and i am just missing something

Cherry Tomato harvest after a good rain 🌧️ because cherry tomatoes are more prone to splits than beefsteak tomatoes 🍅
