Is this a fungus? My 5 year old says its cause of too much water. Is it a pest reaction?
When the weird white super kernels are opened they're filled with black powder.
Or is this something else? I'm hoping I got lucky.
It's not even 3 feet tall yet but it's making tassels. This is ornamental corn, Glass Gem / Painted Mountain / Northern Lights mixed cross type. Zone 8b near Seattle.
My first planting of sweetcorn is tasseling, and fireflies are out in the commercial corn fields.
Hope this is the place for corn pictures 😄
I knew this was a thing, that the kernel color can show what the genetics of the seed inside are, and that different kernels can have different 'fathers' but this shows it so clearly.
The bundle of 3 cobs all came from the same plant, the all-pink cob is probably self-pollinating, but you can see where the pink color changes to yellow/green because a new pollen source started dominating.
The two yellow/green cobs came from a plant that was next to the pink one; that was clearly 'daddy' :)
Zone 7b, Texas. To me, the leaves are looking withered and brittle. Do I need to water more? Water less? I just put down some hay to be mulch this evening. It’s been blistering hot over here, so I’m thinking they aren’t getting enough water?
