Weird corn update!

https://www.reddit.com/r/corn/s/7QC3DTNe22 was the previous post, 2 months ago when the corn was only a foot or two tall and already tasseling -- whoever said it was about to shoot up in height was right, it's over 6' in places now. Tons of tillers. This is colorful flint corn, first row closes to camera is Glass Gem and Northern Lights, the back rows are my own seed-saved mix going on something like 15 generations now.

Anyone know what's up with Island Handyman?

I have a lot of various projects around the house, like patching drywall, laying some flooring, fixing some things like broken doorknobs etc, and I contacted Island Handyman; they came out and promptly fixed the first thing I had that was kind of vital (my hose tap was stuck), and I showed the fellow around the projects, he took measurements and such and said that they could certainly do all the work I was looking for. He said he'd give me an estimate by email, and went away. Weeks passed, and they didn't respond to my queries, but eventually they sent an invoice for the hose tap repair, which I paid that same day. And since then, no emails, no estimates, and I've been texting the number I'd been talking to them with every few days now, trying to get any response (politely, just "Hello?") and there has been zero reply, no emails, no nothing-- I'm worried that either something has happened to them, or they've decided I'm not someone they want to work for-? I can't figure it out but it's distressing because I NEED someone to do this work for me, and I'm happy to pay, but where are they???

Artist who "got the unicorn right"

I remember reading an article where Peter S Beagle met a young artist who showed him her portfolio and he was very impressed with her work and said "she was the only one who got my unicorn right" -- can anyone tell me the name of the artist and did she ever do any other work?

What do I need to know?

Hi! I am thinking about maybe getting some bantam chickens next spring, because I've never kept chickens before but everyone I know who has them says they are fun and interesting pets! I live in a rural area and chickens are allowed (my neighbor a block away has some). I have about half an acre, partly fenced, and live in the PNW. The local feed store has "assorted bantams" in the season, and I like the idea of something smaller.

What are the best books, websites, resources etc for learning all I need to know? Thank you for any help in advance!

Colorful corns and seeds to share

Hi! I just realized I had a few messages about people wanting seeds of the colorful flint corn mix I grow-- I responded to a couple but I think I accidentally deleted a couple, so if you didn't get a response from me yet and you'd like some seeds, drop me a line in the comments and I'll send a message! Also let me know if there's particular colors/traits you want! I don't need any payment for them or postage, I'm just happy to share! :)

Corn pollination changes kernel color

I knew this was a thing, that the kernel color can show what the genetics of the seed inside are, and that different kernels can have different 'fathers' but this shows it so clearly.

The bundle of 3 cobs all came from the same plant, the all-pink cob is probably self-pollinating, but you can see where the pink color changes to yellow/green because a new pollen source started dominating.

The two yellow/green cobs came from a plant that was next to the pink one; that was clearly 'daddy' :)

My corn is being weird

It's not even 3 feet tall yet but it's making tassels. This is ornamental corn, Glass Gem / Painted Mountain / Northern Lights mixed cross type. Zone 8b near Seattle.

Backyard D&D adventure with toy figures

Remember how much fun it used to be, when you were a little kid, to play in a dirt-and-sticks backyard with your action figures? Get some of those durable WOTC D&D plastic minis, get your friends and character sheets, and have your characters explore a strange pocket dimension where they seem to be shrunken down to the size of toys, and have to navigate through thick grass, giant tree roots, and watch out for Mom's prize petunias!!
