I built a free app for pig, cattle and poultry farmers

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a small personal project I’ve been working on.

I’m a swine veterinarian working on pig farms in Germany, and I originally built this app for myself and my colleagues to make everyday work a bit easier. Over time it grew into something I thought others might find useful too.
-News
-Market snapshot
-Tools (light and sound quality estimation, water flow, FCR etc)
-Calendar for recurring tasks
-Notes

Google has just approved it on the Play Store. 🎉

At the moment it’s available only on Android. An iPhone version is planned, but Apple development is significantly more expensive, so it will take a little longer.

The app will stay free for quitez a while because my main goal right now is to collect feedback and ideas from people who actually use it.
If you have a minute to try it, I’d really appreciate any suggestions for features or improvements.

Securing chicken run before vacation

We leave Mon for a trip to the beach for five nights. We have a chicken coop within an electric fence. Normally we let the girls out of the coop early in the morning and put them up right before dark and they just run around their 600 sq ft run during the day. Husband wanted rig up a larger, completely enclosed space for them before we left, instead of finding someone to come over morning and night to let them out/put them up. Their coop isn't large enough to leave them closed up in while we're gone so he wanted to move them into a 100 sq foot dog pen just for the time we're gone. It's a chain link pen and I told him to get .5" hardware cloth to run over it and put an apron around the bottom. He waited until the last minute and now there's no hardware cloth in in stock anywhere near us. There's steel chicken wire we can get but I'd always heard that wasn't actually strong enough to secure them. But would the chicken wire work over a chain link fence that would also be within a four foot electric fence? We're in NC.

TLDR is steel chicken wire over a chain link dog pen that is within a four foot electric fence going to be enough security for my girls to be left a lone in for five night?

Can anyone tell me if meat or heritage?

These are 8 weeks old and I believe them to be royal palms as one has a black feather growing in. They are from a feed store which gets from cackle hatchery and they do have white heritage breeds available from cackle. I feel for this size and age they are heritage but I want to be sure. They are currently being socialized to eventually live with my chickens but they don’t spend all day with them yet and are just switching to a 20% protein food. I’m hoping for heritage as they would be nice to help deter hawks and they have wonderful personalities but iam able to give them a proper diet to live full lives if they are meat birds. It was a mixed bin of turkey breeds.

How to trust chicken from the store as someone who orders for delivery (cooking from raw)

Delete if not allowed, but I dont know where else to go to get real human info about this specific query.

Kinda confusing title, but I have SEVERE emetophobia. Chicken is one of the foods that I have kind of completely removed from my diet (Sprouts' buffalo chicken nuggets are the only exception). I was also blessed with the knowledge of US food safety training, so I'm kinda terrified when it comes to chicken. I have a slew of reasons I cant leave the house or go to the store in person, so I have to order through walmart, or instacart.

I already have a meat thermometer, I know all the warning signs of time/temp abused chicken. But my brain tells me that I dont understand the signs, or that even though I know something has been time/temp abused, what if it is a trick (? idk).

Please, someone give me some peace of mind. I really miss chicken. I always overcook my food, so cooking it to temp isnt an issue. mainly just how can I build trust with chicken.

Could Capsaicin Be a Promising Research Lead for Blackhead Disease?

I’ve been digging into the research on blackhead disease (Histomonas meleagridis) in turkeys, and I wanted to get the community’s thoughts.
Blackhead remains one of the most devastating diseases affecting turkeys, yet there are still very limited approved treatment options. That got me wondering whether there are promising research directions that deserve more attention.
One thing I found interesting is that:
A published in vitro study reported that a proprietary plant-extract blend containing oregano, cinnamon, thyme, and Capsicum-derived compounds showed direct antihistomonal activity. The authors suggested the effect was due to direct damage to the histomonads rather than simply reducing bacteria.
Obviously, that study doesn’t prove capsaicin is responsible—the blend also contained compounds such as thymol, carvacrol, eugenol, and cinnamaldehyde. It could be one compound, several acting together, or something else entirely.
Still, it made me wonder:
Has anyone seen research where these phytochemicals have been isolated and tested individually against Histomonas meleagridis?
With the limited therapeutic options currently available, it seems like identifying the active compound(s) could be a worthwhile research direction.
I’d especially like to hear from anyone with experience in poultry research, veterinary parasitology, or university extension programs. If I’ve misunderstood any of the literature or missed important studies, I’d appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Anyone else miss there chickens?

Hello! I recently moved to the suburbs for personal reasons and unfortunately we are not allowed to own chickens, chickens brought so much joy to my life, we tamed them as chicks , I trained my Dominique hen Shreddie to fly on my arm, we loved how dumb they could be, I almost had a chicken fly into the fire place once, I’m glad there was a barrier, we laugh about it now, I miss those empty googly eyes that look at you when you walk outside with food, or when you wiggle your finger at it’s face and it thinks it’s a worm, we also had notable hens throughout the years that we loved and remember especially, and those hens which became affectionate which have included shreddie, Eddie the barred rock, Frita the silkie, crazy baby the polish, and Aldo the wise hen(not really wise) anyone else miss owning chickens?

C.O.O.P. Technology

Hello, I created a prototype for a system that monitors chickens as well as identifying predators. This system uses a computer vision to count the number of chickens in the coop before closing the coop at night. If this system identifies that a chicken is missing, it will send a notification to the owner so they can search for it. Furthermore, when a predator is identified, the system will send a notification to the owner and play the sound the predator makes, alerting the chickens of the danger so they can hide from the danger. This system allows me to leave the house and let my chickens free range in my backyard with increased safety… and less anxiety!

If you could fill out this form about any interest in it would be greatly appreciated: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLScEJZ0l1LE.../viewform...

Found My Chicken

I went to the yard to feed my girls and I could not find Madonna anywhere. It’s really hot outside and I was looking for her everywhere in the yard. No dice. I grew pretty desperate because she is by far my favorite. Very, very, smart and friendly. I went inside to change my t-shirt and this is what I found…

Found my hen in bad condition

My hens are not very old, haven’t even started laying eggs yet but should be very close to it. I went outside to check on my hens and one of them was dead asleep. I talked loudly and even pat her to wake her up and she only did once I nudged her quite a bit. She is breathing and will wake up for a few seconds if I move her around but other than that she is pretty much unable to stand or stay awake. I don’t think she’s egg bound, and I don’t know what it could be or what to do really. I currently have her inside on a heating blanket and towel, with her head propped up to help her breathe correctly. She’s had a bit of water after I dipped her beak in it, and she pooped white on her towel. It wasn’t very hot outside today and she had plenty of shade+cold water, but she could be dehydrated. I added some vitamin B to the water I’ve given her but she hasn’t had much.
Also every once in a great while she will wake up suddenly, and then go right back to sleep.
Has anyone had this happen to them or is it very common? I’m fairly new to this. She seems stable enough to wait until morning to bring her to the vet.
Thank you

One turkey in a flock of chickens (couple ducks thrown in)

I grew up in the suburbs and so this is all so new to me, sorry if this is a silly question. We have about 30 chickens, 4 ducks and one turkey (had bought 4 as babes but something got to them in the barn) and she is the best pet I think I've ever had. It's crazy. She sleeps on the porch, waits for me to get my coffee in the morning and then walks around with me. She singles to the radio and will perch on the fence while my husband works on the cars. I have a three year old and they are BEST friends. Garfunkel, the turkey not my daughter, will like lay down when she gets near and be very submissive. She lets us pet her. Is this normal behavior for these dinosaurs???

Egg log that is actually worth keeping

For those of you who have actually logged your flocks egg count I’ve been wondering if a simple egg log is actually worth keeping for a small flock?

Like I don’t want to use a full spreadsheet just daily egg count, weather and maybe any weird shell days.

I don’t want a system that takes any longer than collecting the eggs but part of me feels like it would make it easier to spot a real laying drop bs just guessing from memory and part of me thinks I’d do it for 4 days and forget.

If you actually track eggs, what do you log that ends up being useful later and if you tired and dropped it what made it not with the hassle?

Motherhood at its finest- A mama hen fighting for her babies' food.

Two chicks were snacking on some COOHGRUBS BSFL when their mama joined the fight. Eventually, the rooster stepped in to break up the conflict. I guess both of those chicks must be his kids! 😂

Dying hen

One of my hens, Wig, has slowly stopped eating over the last month. She used to be my largest chicken, but now she’s basically bones. She fully refuses to eat the feed pellets, but she will eat treats and scrapes but not more than a hand full. The last 2 days I’ve been force feeding her with a catheter in the afternoons to give her a chance to eat before I force it down. But her crop is always empty.

I do not have the money right now to take her to the vet, and I can’t find anything wrong myself. She is between 7-9 years old now. She is a rescue so we had to guess her age, but I’ve had her for at least 7. I separated her from the flock, and when she stands she shakes, so she mostly lays down.

Is there a way to nurse her back to health? Or should I just cull her now and not prolong her suffering? I would have culled her by now, but when I put her back out with the flock today while I was cleaning her cage, she seemed to really enjoy walking around with them and even did some pecking.
