Busting the myth

Hey! A Dr here...recently came across a lot of posts about hormone usage in broiler chicken its just an age old myth that has been busted long back. 1, no way the business will ever be profitable for poultry farmers if they start to roid up their chickens that are sold for market price ..and no diluting it into drinking water isnt how hormones are absorbed or work in the body 😂2, No "hormone" survives the heat of cooking, they degrade and lose all their potency. The only thing to be actually worried about is the usage of antibiotics, its a real proven issue in most mass produced livestock and it could lead to antibiotic resistance developing in humans gradually! So I would recommend you go for "antibiotic-free" certified produce always! Dont let people fear-monger you into spending twice or thrice of what you could be paying just for a worthless Organic label or if you actually can afford country grown chicken that might have a slightly improved nutrition profile due to the variety in feed but its obviously not a realistic choice all the time . Organic labelled overpriced broiler chicken is an actual scam currently running in the country

What do you do if a “pullet” turns out to be a rooster and you absolutely can’t keep roosters?

Hi everyone! First-time chicken owner here and I have 7 chicks coming from Meyer Hatchery on June 23. I ordered all females because I absolutely cannot have a rooster where I live.

I know hatcheries are usually pretty accurate, but I also know mistakes happen sometimes, so I’m just trying to think ahead and have a backup plan instead of panicking later if it happens.

I’m getting a Wheaten Olive Egger, Opal Legbar, Lavender Ameraucana, Cream Legbar, Black Copper Marans, Buff Orpington, and Silver Laced Wyandotte.

For those of you who have actually dealt with this, what did you do if one of your “pullets” turned out to be a rooster and keeping him wasn’t an option at all? Were you able to rehome him easily? Did the hatchery offer any kind of replacement? Did a local farm or feed store take him?

I know the chances are probably low, but I’d honestly be attached by then, so I just want to know what people realistically do in that situation because “just get rid of it” sounds a lot easier than it probably is.

Would love to hear real experiences!

Struggling with 4 week turkeys dying spontaneously, help/advice on vaccines

Hello! Coming here for help since our babies keep falling off one by one, after no signs of sickness. The only thing off with them is that they have diarrhea, but they arent acting any differently. We keep them under a light but with plent of room to get away from it, Ive seen it could be Coccidiosis, but just checking here in case.

I have heard they need vaccines but have no idea where to go to get them, and cant find any vaccines for sale. If anyone has any sources I'd love to know!

Hen Bald Spots

I have six hens. I noticed this condition with one of then when we got them a month or two ago and now several of them have it. Bald spots at the base of their tails. When I look closely I don’t see any visible bugs or anything and I haven’t noticed them pecking at each other.. maybe something going on inside the coop during the night?

Brahmas not entering coop at night

I work at a school and we’ve recently bought 5 Brahma hens. Their coop is inside a large secure run and has an automatic solar door.

I noticed yesterday that the coop didn’t look like they’d been in it overnight, so I arranged the bedding in such a way that I’d be able to tell this morning.

When I arrived the hens were outside of the coop, were soaking wet and the bedding was exactly as I left it yesterday.

I picked 3 of them up and put them inside the coop and will go to check them again shortly

Any idea why they aren’t going inside or what I can do to resolve this?

Should We Use This Premium Egg Box Or Deliver In A Normal Package ?

Hey guys, so we've been going back and forth on this for a while now and honestly can't make up our minds — so thought why not just ask here.

We currently deliver eggs in a pretty basic cardboard box. Nothing fancy, does the job. But we recently found this premium egg box and it actually looks really good. Better protection, cleaner design, feels more put together overall.

The problem is it costs more. Not a crazy amount, but enough that we'd have to either eat the cost or slightly bump up the price. And we're not sure if our customers even care about packaging that much when it comes to eggs.

Like does anyone actually notice how their eggs show up at the door? Or is it one of those things where you only notice if something goes wrong — like broken eggs?

We haven't had major complaints with our current packaging but we also wonder if better packaging would just make the whole thing feel more trustworthy, you know?

Has anyone here made this switch before? Was it actually worth it or did you feel like you were just spending extra money for no real reason? Would love to hear some honest experiences.

Ocular Mareks? (Swipe for today’s photos)

Wondering if this is suspicious for ocular mareks. My flock is 1 year old and came from a well known hatchery that vaccinates at hatch (I know this doesn’t fully prevent it though). My cream legbar has always been lower in pecking order. It seems to be getting worse lately and she’s now missing feathers on her head and backside of her neck. So her face has been pecked at quite a bit and she has signs of trauma around her eyes/eyelids so I’m unsure if this is related to trauma or if it could be mareks. I don’t really see any signs otherwise. One day recently I did notice a small limp but it resolved by the next morning so I’m not sure if that counts as a sign. First photo is right eye in Nov 2025, second is from March 2026, and third photo is from today, both right and left eyes. I have a sinking feeling this is mareks but ChatGPT has said no and I don’t have anyone else I can ask. Appreciate any thoughts from those experienced with Mareks.

Question about day old chick.

Hi! So this is my first time hatching eggs in an incubator. Mama killed/ate 2 of the babies when they hatched in the coop so I saved this one yesterday after she stepped on the shell, so the baby came a bit early. He/she is walking/stumbling as best as it can and is cheeping. They slept through the night very well but I’m worried it might be hungry or thirsty? It’s been in the incubator for 24 hours here in about another 3 hours. My question is: what is the thing that is still attached to its behind? When do I need to move the chick into a brooder to try and give it food and water? If this is the egg sack, do I leave the chick in the incubator? I’m just kinda lost as to what I need to do for it. I’m praying it pulls through as it has energy and seemed to want to live. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Injured Turkey

Seeking advice:

Yesterday we rescued a baby turkey with an injured leg, the man we got him from said he "couldn't keep up" with his flock and he needed a new home. He has a seriously injured leg that he is not able to support himself with. It looks and feels dislocated so we attempted to splint it last night but it seems to be even worse today. We've been keeping chickens and ducks for a few years but this is our first turkey - if there is anything we can do for him we'd obviously love to see him thrive and live a long healthy life, but if we are just prolonging the inevitable we don't want him to suffer. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

What's wrong with her eye? She's one of the lowest chickens on the pecking order, but shes been by herself more than usual and just stands in the run with her eyes closed. Is she sick, or is it a bullying injury?

Help My Babies!!!

This is my second go with chicks. My first flock was 3 years old and was not laying, so we had to put them down.😭😭

I got 33 chicks a couple weeks ago, and I put them in a big walk in cage that we had them in until this afternoon. I noticed that some of the chicks were bleeding by their tail feathers. The other chicks were picking on them, and once it started bleeding, they just keep pecking at it.

So I moved them out into my outdoor coop because I think they were bored in the other coop. They were out there for an hour and they weren’t pecking. Just now, I went out and they were pecking again!!!!😡😡 How can I stop them from pecking?!?!?

Any idea what breed this chicken is? 5/6 weeks old.

Chick is around 5 weeks old I believe! I was told the wrong breed, as this chick now has feathered toes. Any idea what breed it may be?
