My free Garmin app that counts down your burn time now works on Fenix, FR255, Instinct, and every button-only watch

A few months ago my girlfriend got badly burned on vacation. We weren't being careless — she just had no idea how fast the UV was stacking up. That's what pushed me to build SunAlert, a Garmin app that counts down your personal burn time based on your skin type and UV index.

When I posted it here, someone asked: "what if I put on sunscreen, does that change anything?" It does, a lot — so I built that in too. The app now lets you set your activity and SPF, adjusts the burn countdown accordingly, fires a reapply alert when your protection window is running out, and tracks your Vitamin D dose separately.

The latest update (v1.4.0) adds full physical button navigation — UP, DOWN, SELECT, and BACK work across every screen. If you're on a Fenix 7, FR255, Instinct, or any other button-first watch, the app is now fully usable without touching the screen. Touch devices work exactly as before, and buttons and touch can be mixed freely.

Free, no ads.

If you like it, a rating on the Connect IQ store genuinely helps get it in front of more people — and sun awareness is kind of the whole point. If something feels off or missing, drop a comment. I read everything and I've already shipped features that came directly from feedback in threads like this one.

You asked for a sunscreen timer — so I built one into my Garmin sun app

v1.3.0 now lets you pick your SPF before a run, adjusts the burn countdown accordingly, fires a reapply alert when your protection window is running out, and tracks your Vitamin D dose in real time. Free app, no ads .I genuinely, thank you to whoever asked that question. It made the app a lot better!

upvotes will be very appreciated to help me spread sun awareness 🙏🏾

and please if you have any feedback don't hesitate, i am taking everything into account (none touch devices will be added hopefully for the next version)

I built a free Garmin app that tells you exactly how many minutes until you start burning — SunAlert on Connect IQ

My girlfriend got badly burned at the beach on our vacation.

She didn't realize how quickly the UV was adding up.

That got me thinking — I wear a Garmin every day, it already

knows the UV index, why isn't there something on my wrist

warning me before it's too late?

So I built SunAlert. You pick your skin type (Fitzpatrick

scale I–VI) and it calculates exactly how many minutes you

have before you start burning at the current UV level.

It also shows a tan zone so you know when tanning begins

before burn risk kicks in.

It runs as a glance widget so it's always one swipe away,

and sends a notification when you cross the thresholds —

even when the app is closed.

Supports 71 touch-screen Garmin devices. Completely free.
