New girders to be set on St. Charles Road overpass this week

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The new St. Charles Road overpass in Columbia is taking shape as construction hits a major milestone this week with the installation of girders.

For the safety of drivers under the bridge, Interstate 70 traffic will narrow and be rerouted in two-hour windows during the overnight hours so crews can safely place these large beams, which will support the driving surface of the new bridge. Access to St. Charles Road will also be restricted. Anticipated timing and traffic impacts:

9 – 11 p.m. Wednesday, May 20: Eastbound I-70 narrowed to one lane and routed up and over the ramps at Exit 131 (St. Charles Road/Lake of the Woods Roads).

No access to or from St. Charles Road and eastbound I-70.

Westbound I-70 and the westbound ramps at St. Charles Road are expected to remain open.

9 – 11 p.m. Thursday, May 21: Westbound I-70 narrowed to one lane and routed up and over the ramps at Exit 131 (St. Charles Road/Lake of the Woods Roads).

No access to or from St. Charles Road and westbound I-70.

Eastbound I-70 and the eastbound ramps at St. Charles Road are expected to remain open.

All work is weather-permitting and subject to change.

MoDOT asks all motorists to work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones.

This work is part of the first project in MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program, Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City, which will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between Columbia) and Kingdom City. This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements to the I-70 interchanges at U.S. Route 63 and U.S. Route 54.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville. Providence Road overpass to close for replacement in late May I-70 to be narrowed, rerouted May 29-31

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Route 163 (Providence Road) over Interstate 70 in Columbia is set to close in late May for five months as a new, improved bridge is built. The first step in the bridge replacement project is demolishing the existing structure, during which I-70 will be narrowed for 36 hours.

From 9 p.m. on May 29, 2026, to 9 a.m. on May 31, 2026, construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation plan to demolish and remove the Providence Road overpass bridge and the pedestrian bridge, both over I-70. Traffic on both I-70 and Providence Road will be impacted as follows:

I-70: Both directions of I-70 will narrow to one lane and there will be no access to or from Providence Road.

For a portion of the demolition, drivers will be directed up and over the ramps at Exit 126 (Providence Road) and back onto I-70.

Missouri Route 763 (Range Line Street): The ramp from Range Line Street onto westbound I-70 will be closed. Motorists will need to use an alternate route.

Providence Road: Traffic on Providence Road will not have direct access to or from I-70. Motorists will need to use an alternate route.

Cyclists, pedestrians, etc. will not be able to cross I-70, as the pedestrian bridge will be closed. A signed detour will be in place.

Motorists are advised to plan extra travel time as backups are anticipated.

Once the demolition and cleanup are complete on Sunday morning, May 31, I-70 will return to normal traffic patterns. As the new bridge is built over a five-month period, there will be several traffic impacts to Providence Road:

The ramp from westbound I-70 to Providence Road will remain closed for the duration of bridge construction.

All other ramps will remain open at this time.

There will be no access to cross over the interstate for all road users, including vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, etc.

Signed detours will direct motorists and pedestrians around the closure.

Construction of the new overpass bridge is expected to continue through the end of October.

The new overpass bridge will be longer to accommodate the new I-70 lanes underneath and will be raised to allow taller vehicles to pass under it. The overpass will feature pedestrian crossings on both sides and, thanks to local partnerships, added beautification elements will include decorative lighting, enhanced railings and fencing, stone-pattern retaining walls, and bridge facade elements.

All work is weather-permitting and subject to change.

MoDOT asks all motorists to work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones.

This work is part of one project in MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program, Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia, which will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 14-mile stretch of I-70 between the Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport and approximately U.S. Route 63 in Columbia. This $441 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements at Route J/O, Midway (Route 40), Stadium Blvd., Business Loop 70, Providence Rd., Rangeline St., and U.S. Route 63.

Families report widespread bronze vase thefts at Columbia cemetery

https://www.centralmoinfo.com/families-report-widespread-bronze-vase-thefts-at-columbia-cemetery/

COLUMBIA — Families visiting Memorial Park Cemetery say dozens of bronze memorial vases have been stolen from gravesites in recent months, raising concerns ahead of the Memorial Day holiday.

Teresa Shaw, who has several relatives buried at the cemetery, told a local ABC News affiliate she discovered at least five of her own family members’ vases missing. She believes the thefts may stretch back five to six months, noting she counted 50 to 60 missing vases across the grounds.

Cemetery management confirmed the thefts in a written statement, saying rising metal prices have led to similar crimes nationwide. The funeral home said it is working with Columbia Police and encouraged families to file reports if they notice missing or damaged memorial items. Officials also urged local scrap metal dealers to report suspicious activity.

Some families told investigators they have hesitated to file police reports, citing concerns about limited law‑enforcement resources. Others said they reported missing vases to cemetery staff but have not seen corrective action taken.

Shaw said she believes the thefts may be more widespread than what families have discovered so far, noting many loved ones cannot check gravesites regularly. With Memorial Day approaching, she expects more families will soon realize items are missing.

Regional trend: Similar bronze‑vase thefts reported across Missouri

The Columbia thefts come as other Missouri communities report similar crimes. In January, a Foristell man was arrested in a multi‑county investigation involving nearly 200 stolen bronze cemetery vases valued at more than $25,000, many taken from veterans’ graves. Investigators said the vases were being stolen for scrap metal.

What families should do

Memorial Funeral Home says families who believe a vase has been stolen should contact their office and file a report with Columbia Police. Officials also recommend checking gravesites ahead of Memorial Day, when visitation increases and thefts become more noticeable.

Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia project breaks ground

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The groundbreaking of the next project within MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program kicked off with an official ceremony today, May 7, in Columbia. Congressman Mark Alford (U.S. Representative, District 4) and Missouri. Gov. Mike Kehoe joined numerous federal, state, and local elected officials and leaders, along with members of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) and its Design-Build contractor team to break ground on Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia.

"MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program is transforming Missouri’s oldest interstate corridor,” explains MHTC Vice Chairman Dustin Boatwright. “As a commissioner, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand the tremendous amount of work that goes into delivering projects of this scale. Through the Design-Build process, we are achieving exceptional value in each project that moves forward. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony - our fifth in this historic program - commemorates our commitment to improving this critical interstate corridor and the regions and travelers it serves.”

Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia is a $441 million Design-Build project that will add a third lane of travel in each direction and make other improvements along 14-miles of I-70 between approximately the Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport and U.S. Route 63 in Columbia. This project was awarded in December 2025 to The ESS Team, led by contractor Emery Sapp & Sons and their designer Parsons. It is the fourth construction project awarded within MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program. Construction begins in Spring 2026 and is scheduled for completion in late 2029. The project includes:

A third lane in each direction to I-70 between the Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport and approximately U.S. Route 63 in Columbia, with all new 11” full-depth concrete pavement.

Improvements to the I-70 interchanges/intersections at Route J/O, Midway (Route 40), Stadium Boulevard, Business Loop 70, Providence Road, Rangeline Street, and U.S. Route 63.

14 new bridge structures.

New north and south outer road connections across Perche Creek.

The team has also committed to keeping two lanes of travel open in each direction during peak travel times.

“This project represents a significant investment in Missouri’s future,” explained Emery Sapp & Sons Executive Vice President Josh Doerhoff. “We’re proud to lead this effort as a Missouri-based, employee-owned company committed to delivering safe, high-quality infrastructure.”

By summer 2026, three Improve I-70 Program projects will be underway in central Missouri, between Boonville and Kingdom City. While two lanes of travel will be open along I-70 during peak travel times, motorists can anticipate reduced speed limits and narrowed lanes across the state. Motorists are urged to drive the posted speed limit, eliminate distractions, and allow for extra time.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and signed into law by the governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
