I love Clovers

I love our little local natural market! Yesterday I bought organic blackberries and blueberries from Clovers and then went to Trader Joe's for snacks and TJ's organic berries were a whole $1-2 more. I find that Clover's is cheaper than TJs or Natural Grocers and even Gerbes on many items and honestly the produce is a thousand times fresher. I swear they didn't pay me to write this, I just wanted to make a little love note to them 💗🍀 We are SO lucky to have a local grocery store like that one.

Marideth Sisco has Died, the "Winter's Bone" star & Missouri Ozarks Bluegrass Artist was 82.

One of the Missouri Ozarks' most famous residents, Marideth was a storyteller, a singer & a folklorist.

To me, she always spoke and felt like some living embodiment of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. She could so perfectly discuss those balances between nature and man, or how politics and circumstances could affect the lives of Missouri residents throughout centuries of its history and lore.

She actually spent two decades as a small town Missouri journalist in West Plains, Later she became a public radio host at KSMU at Missouri State, regularly sharing the local Ozarks culture and folklore, and she played music. Sometimes with the very talented local Ozarks band Blackberry Winter, and she wrote books.

It was a book signing that lead to her consulting both music and production on an upcoming movie heavily featuring the Missouri Ozarks, set very close to her hometown on the border of Arkansas.

If you haven't seen Winter's Bone, it does an absolutely exceptional job of depicting the determination and grit and beauty of the Ozarks, with an extraordinary story and cast. The film was a breakout role for Jennifer Lawrence, released less than two years before Hunger Games made her a superstar.

And the movie prominently featured a really moving musical example of Missouri Bluegrass by Sisco, who was accompanied by a host of Missouri musicians. It really shined a spotlight and gave a voice to a very unique brand of bluegrass tradition carried on in the Missouri Ozarks.

It was Marideth's appearance & musical contribution to the four-time Oscar-nominated breakout hit movie that made her a celebrity as a senior citizen.

The movie's success lead to numerous tours, performances and appearances, and Marideth seized those opportunities to evangelize her beloved Missouri music, culture and lore.

Her speaking was honest and entrancing, and she sang like an angel.

Sadly I only came close to having the privilege of seeing Sisco perform live, but I'm one of I'm sure many Missourians who regard Sisco as one of Missouri's most cherished cultural personalities, deserving of a place among the likes of Benton, Twain, Wilder and Truman. she was a grand library of Missouri history now gone, but we're all lucky she recorded so much.

If you don't know Marideth's music or her storytelling, do yourself a favor and have a listen. It'll make you proud of Missouri. I left some links below.

Looking for an orthopedic doctor here in COMO that specializes in knees. Bedside manner is extremely important. We need someone who will take the time to answer our questions. Hospital affiliation isn't important.

Last day of school tomorrow. 18th year. It’s been a great school year with an amazing group of kids and families. Also nabbed a Friday evening reservation at Chris McDs. At the moment, I feel so grateful, and I’m looking forward to that caesar salad and steak!

How do I get ahold of the postmaster? Cuz my mailcarrier is useless.

I have tried calling the 1800 number and get the AI runaround. This is the 10th time in less than a year my flag is up, outgoing mail up front. Doesn't get picked up, instead new mail placed on top, flag still up. Once or twice I can understand but this is becoming an every month when I have outgoing bills. If these new mailcarriers not even trained in how to properly deliver/pick-up mail, why are we paying them our tax dollars?!?!?

Greasy McDonalds Air

Thats all I smell when walking close to the mosque/surrounding streets. Want to take a stroll through Flatbranch park for a quick nature break? It now comes with the smell of grease and fake meat! Yay!

Wish we could've added more green space in that location instead. Or at least a restaurant that doesn't reek.

Lets talk glass recycling

Please explain to me how Columbia remains the lone city out of this state that chooses not to use Ripple glass for our recycling needs? It’s not the space needed for their roll-over collection bins and it’s not the need for trucks for transport or the area needed for bin collection. This city has all of those and you have a company ready to get recycling of glass started within 2 days yet here we are, over a year since the tornado destroyed the recycling center. It is even crazier to think that Columbia is about to start recycling collection weekly for city residents while cities and towns such as Jeff City, Fulton, and Moberly all have collection spots. Get Ripple glass here yesterday. It’s a win-win, by eliminating trash that has been going to Columbia Landfill, glass is recycled for future reuse, and a 3rd-party takes it away for the city making the weekly recycling run easier and with the ability to pick up more on a daily basis due to the weight associated with glass. Rant over.

Boone Electric Co-Op credit question

Does anyone know how the Boone Electric capital credit program works? I have been here for 10 years and don't think I've ever seen it applied. I just got another credit notice and my credit balance is now close to $1200. It says these credits will be paid back to you when they are in a financial position to do so.

Are they ever in a financial position to do so? Has anyone ever received their credits?

Short Trip to Columbia - What to Do

Hi everyone! I'll be in Columbia tomorrow through Saturday afternoon for a conference on Mizzou's campus. I have tomorrow afternoon/evening available, Friday night, as well as a couple of hours Saturday afternoon before I head home. I'm looking for recommendations of places to go/see.

I have been told I need to eat at Shakespeare's pizza, which is currently my plan for tomorrow--but open to other suggestions! The rest of my meals are taken care of/planned (so if you could only eat at one place...).

Looking for cute shops to pop into tomorrow or Saturday afternoon, a decent bar with good (and/or cheap) cocktails, and maybe a park or museum that could be worth a quick visit on Saturday.

Thanks in advance!

UPDATES:

  • Found out we are going to The Heidelberg for dinner on Friday.
  • Here's my current plan (thanks to your recommendations!):
    • Thursday: downtown shops and dinner (maybe still Shakespeare's, maybe not). Sparky's Ice Cream and then a drink somewhere (so many good options, it sounds like).
    • Friday: pop by the Midway Antique Mall after conference before dinner, drinks to follow.
    • Saturday: conference wraps up at 1 or 2pm. Stop into the Museum of Art and Archaeology for a bit, hit up Devil's Icebox for a quick hike, and grab another bite to eat before my 5 hour drive home.
    • Now wishing I'd decided to stay Saturday night, too!

Appreciate the info! Looking forward to my first time in CoMo!

Columbia City Council passes ordinance restricting 'gray' gaming machines

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia is continuing the crack down on unregulated gaming machines with a new ordinance.

An ordinance was passed at Monday night's council meeting against the maintenance and offering of illegal gaming or lottery machines.

Previous reporting shows the city has been targeting unregulated machines known as “gray machines” or “no-chance machines.” The machines have been described as being “skill-based,” which has brought up questions of legality.  The Columbia ban includes include a $1,000 fine or 30 days in jail.

Owning the machine is still not illegal, it just has to remain off and unused.

More than a dozen businesses allegedly operated an unregulated machine. The City Council looked to ban the use of those gaming machines as far back as February, but held off as the state appeared to have been moving forward with legislation at the time.

Anthony Gier, the owner of Eagle Stop convenience stores was charged May 12 in Boone and Miller counties after a statewide sting.

He was charged with four counts of first-degree promoting gambling in both counties. An initial court appearance is scheduled in Miller County for 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, while a hearing is set in Boone County for 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 26.

Similar felony and misdemeanor charges were filed on four other business owners.

On Feb. 10, Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway also focused on unregulated gaming enforcement by suing five businesses with gaming machines in Dunklin County.

What the heck happened to the Syrian Kitchen?

Ordered hummus with shawarma yesterday and it was completely average. No flavor whatsoever with the hummus. Tasted store bought pre-packaged. Shawarma was crunchy and the bread was just a round tortilla looking thing cut into triangles and tough. Completely different menu. I’m sad!!

Private landlords?

Long shot, but me and my wife are looking to rent in CoMo. I made a post a while back asking about rents, and got some good info. In the past, we’ve had a great experience renting from a private landlord instead of a mgmt company (it was a husband/wife and they were the nicest!). I’m wondering if there is anyone like that in CoMo (that may also be in this sub). I can give more pertinent info, but we are looking for 3 bedroom homes, under $1800. I’m open to dms! TIA

New girders to be set on St. Charles Road overpass this week

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The new St. Charles Road overpass in Columbia is taking shape as construction hits a major milestone this week with the installation of girders.

For the safety of drivers under the bridge, Interstate 70 traffic will narrow and be rerouted in two-hour windows during the overnight hours so crews can safely place these large beams, which will support the driving surface of the new bridge. Access to St. Charles Road will also be restricted. Anticipated timing and traffic impacts:

9 – 11 p.m. Wednesday, May 20: Eastbound I-70 narrowed to one lane and routed up and over the ramps at Exit 131 (St. Charles Road/Lake of the Woods Roads).

No access to or from St. Charles Road and eastbound I-70.

Westbound I-70 and the westbound ramps at St. Charles Road are expected to remain open.

9 – 11 p.m. Thursday, May 21: Westbound I-70 narrowed to one lane and routed up and over the ramps at Exit 131 (St. Charles Road/Lake of the Woods Roads).

No access to or from St. Charles Road and westbound I-70.

Eastbound I-70 and the eastbound ramps at St. Charles Road are expected to remain open.

All work is weather-permitting and subject to change.

MoDOT asks all motorists to work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones.

This work is part of the first project in MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program, Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City, which will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between Columbia) and Kingdom City. This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements to the I-70 interchanges at U.S. Route 63 and U.S. Route 54.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
