Not liking the shakeup at Schnuck's Forum

Produce section is now a game of Tetris. Gluten-free moved and products scattered about.

Aisle immediately facing the pharmacy are now greeting cards!?! And many other things moved.

And self-check sucks -- but that's nothing new. Schnuck's self-check is easily the worst. Walmart, for all its faults, does self-check right.

That is all.

Best explanation I've found so far of why MO should vote no on amendment 4

Not exactly local politics, as it's a state-wide thing, but very important locally as well.

Flock You!

A new camera nest going up on Broadway and Old 63 as I was waiting for the light. And a upgrade to an existing post with a PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) camera being fitted at that same intersection.

There's also third flock camera that just went up that I didn't get a picture of.

Make some good noise at city council meetings y'all!

Left turn over yellow legal or not?

Hi all... So, on a stretch of roadway, a solid yellow line* means do not overtake the vehicle in front of you.

* If on your side or always when it's a double yellow.

But what about this context? Not overtaking, but turning left into a driveway that leads to a shopping plaza? I see people making this left all the time. But I also saw the po po pull someone over at this exact spot after making that turn.

I don't know if it was the turn that attracted the LEO's attention or something else. I mean, people get pulled over for many reasons that aren't readily apparent.

So what's the consensus? Is this an illegal turn or what?

State is Missouri.

Barnacles on Cherry at 7th

First time I've seen this. That owner gonna be pissed.

I believe it takes having at least four unpaid parking tickets or a failure-to-appear warrant issued to get one of these beauties attached to your car.

I-44 is a graveyard of tire scraps

We drove down to Bentonville (live in Columbia) for a couple of days to visit the Crystal Bridge Museum and Museum of Native American History. Excellent, both of them.

We were on I-44 from Lebanon to Joplin and I've never seen so many tire scraps and entire treads littering the highway. One or two that were still on the roadway were kicked up by cars ahead of me that I narrowly avoided -- which is why I leave 10 to 15 seconds spacing to the car in front of me.

And this isn't the only time. I occasionally have business in Springfield and use I-44, again, from Lebanon.

I'm gonna have to rethink my itinerary to avoid I-44 if MODOT can't keep that cleaned up.

Easter Eggs

Sci-fi authors like to hide Easter eggs and Weir is no different.

I found a particularly arcane and fun Easter egg in the book.

In the scene where Grace is on the aircraft carrier, being led from the officer's berth to the conference room, Grace narrates "He led me through a maze of twisty little passages, all alike".

That's a lift from Colossal Cave Adventure, an early text-based computer game often found on mainframes and minis dating from the late 70s. The phrase is famous among early computer nerds. I played that game on an HP3000 and a Univac 1100, both of that era.

I really beamed when I read that!

Also, the Chinese characters on the post-it note stuck to Grace's forehead translate to "Please take me to the official conference room on Deck 7."

Grace's Personal Life

Just finished reading PHM. Have not yet seen the flick.

It's interesting that Weir wrote Grace's character as not having any family entanglements. No spouse, no kids, etc. Just a brief mention of a failed relationship some years prior.

This certainly made it less wrenching especially regarding Stratt drugging Grace and installing him on the HM against his will.

But it occurs to me that Watney (The Martian) was similarly situated. No mention of family.

That seems to relieve Weir from having to craft a story that involves these things, allowing him to focus more on the science and keeping readers/viewers focused on the mission at hand. I rather liked that.

spoilers

>!This also allows the *very satisfying* conclusion where Grace remains on Erid without the need to return to Earth -- and teaching young Eridians, no less!!<

>!I only suspected that ending might happen when Grace turned HM around after discovering that taumoeba was eating through the xenonite.!<

I'm seeing the movie tomorrow night. Can't wait.

New student housing "The Retreat" proposed on Rock Quarry Rd.

Last night at the P&Z meeting, a proposal was made for a 154 unit complex on Rock Quarry just north of Grindstone.

https://www.como.gov/CMS/granicus/downloadfile.php?id=111136&type=attachment

Each unit will be 4br. The plan also calls for 731(!!) parking spaces.

Plans call for access from Rock Quarry and a new southerly extension to Gray Oak Dr (which runs behind the Walmart plaza).

First and foremost, we're seeing a looming and significant college enrollment decline in the US for numerous reasons. One of them is the declining birthdate for years now that will in the coming years affect enrollment numbers.

So is it wise to continue this building boom with units specifically designed for college students?

Secondly, 731 parking spots?? It's not like they're going to drive to classes.
