Hey everyone, for a good decade now there has been this book that occasionally surfaces to the top of my memory. I remember plot points, settings, even what the book looked like and the relative length, but for the life of me I cant remember what it was called.
I don't know the age of the book but I first owned it back around 2011-2013 so its safe to say its older than that. My mother would often take us to thrift stores, I remember purchasing it from one of the massive bins they had so unfortunately I cant give a specific time frame for when it released.
Ok now for what I can remember of the story, I don't know if what I remember is the main plot of the story but its the part that stuck with me all these years and at this point its basically haunting me.
From what I can remember the story settles around a youngish 20's-30's man who finds himself lost in an extremely cold and unhospitable environment (think north pole type cold). He wanders around trying to find anything to help him and ultimately ends up collapsing due to the elements and passing out. When he wakes, he finds himself in a small home inhabited by an aging man (likely 60s) and his daughter (appears to be around the same age as protag). He ends up getting stuck here for a while. During this time he gets to know the man and his daughter, helping around the house, going out to hunt for food, and long story short he ends up developing feelings for the daughter. A lot of time passes throughout all of this and the man ends up practically being part of this family. You really get the feeling of the love between the protag and the woman. Note, this is not a romance novel, this is a science fiction novel.
the next part of the story is very fuzzy but I do remember the climax and twist of the book.
At some point the woman is outside for some reason (fuzzy) and the father freaks out because she isn't supposed to be out there. So our protag goes out to find her. When he finds her through some event (fuzzy) the woman ends up very hurt, or in this case I should say critically damaged. The twist of the story is that the entire time we have spent getting to know this woman she has been a highly advanced android. When the protag brings her (still slightly functioning) back to the father we learn that the fathers real daughter died a long time ago (before protag arrival) and in his grief using his extreme skill in robotics he decided to make his daughter anew. The protag goes though a large mental crisis. trying to figure out if anything he felt was real. Ultimately deciding it was and he was happy to have these experiences in spite of the outcome. And near the end of the story the protag sets out into the cold again trying to find his way home.
The synopsis above is everything I know for sure happened in the story, though there is a point of view I think might help in the search. Don't take what I say next as a guarantee of what to look for in the search but maybe a jumping off point. Because no matter what key words I look up regarding my next point and the synopsis together I never find anything.
For reference I am a very big StarWars fan. I had quite a few starwars related books when I was younger and I don't see myself buying a book of this nature unless it was starwars related. Think of a kid at a thrift store rifling through the book bin, not knowing what the book was about but looking at the cover and seeing starwars and thinking "oh cool a starwars book".
Whenever I remember this book I always remember the protagonist being Luke Skywalker, I always remember the reason he's in the cold is because he crash landed on an ice planet (I don't think it was Hoth), I always remember that the initial reason he stays with the family for so long is because he's trying to repair his X-wing. And I always remember outside the house there is a moister collector like the ones on Tatooine.
But no mater how long I look for a starwars book with these descriptions, I always come up empty. So at this point I just want to know what the book is called to I can buy another copy whether its starwars related or not.
Some final details I remember about the physical book. It was paperback. I believe the entire book was between 100-150 pages. It had a very very simple cover. The cover was a mid deep blue (like underwater glacier blue) front and back no other colors at all. With minor decaling and the title in a slightly deeper blue on the front.
Any help in my search will be greatly appreciated. I will be active in this search with you.
