Starting a PGCE Post-14 English in FE this September how can I prepare now?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been accepted onto the PGCE (Post-14 FE) with English specialism at University Centre Leeds starting this September. I’ll mainly be teaching English GCSE resits and Functional Skills in colleges/FE settings.
I want to start preparing now so I don’t feel completely overwhelmed when the course starts. For anyone already teaching in FE English:
What do you wish you’d done before starting your PGCE?
Are there any books, websites, YouTube channels, or resources you recommend for GCSE resit/Functional Skills teaching?
What should I brush up on most: grammar, marking, lesson planning, behaviour management, safeguarding, etc.?
Is there anything specific about FE colleges that surprised you compared to secondary schools?
Any advice for teaching students who struggle with English or are disengaged from the subject?
I’d also love suggestions for things I can realistically do over summer to feel more confident before September.
