I just had jaw surgery done yesterday and went to Walmart this morning to pick up cold packs for my face as I’m in an incredible amount of pain. Self checkout was empty and had no associates standing there - I paid for my ice packs and headed out.

As I was exiting two associates stopped me and asked me for a receipt. I had left my receipt at self checkout as I am under no legal obligation to present them with a receipt. I don’t really give a damn what their store policy is because I signed no contract with them and their policy doesn’t over ride the law. I explained to the two female employees they can go get my receipt but I’m walking out with my property. One of the women proceeded to grab my arm and attempt to snatch my purse and ice packs away from me.

I cursed her out which in retrospect I shouldn’t have done but I was incredibly upset at having just been assaulted and was already in so much pain from my surgery. She then went back to the cash register to ring out other customers. The other employee went back to get my receipt and walked back up to me. I asked her if everything was on there - she nodded her head, so I directed my attention back to the employee who had assaulted me and told her never to touch me or my property again. She grinned in response.

I know many times the customer is usually in the wrong when they’re in a situation where they’re yelling at an employee. Again, I admit I didn’t handle the situation in the best way but other employees and customers came up to me to yell at me. I left Walmart and filed a report with the Kelowna RCMP for assault and am currently on call with a store manager to report her directly.

I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that store employees think they are allowed to assault customers for not presenting a receipt - which they are under no legal obligation to do!
