MSc Financial Data Science at Surrey: What is the real deal with 1-year placements & London FinTech?

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming international student for the MSc Financial Data Science program at Surrey, opting for the 1-year paid industry placement track.

I come from a software engineering background with practical machine learning experience, and my goal is to target quantitative risk, trading analytics, or data engineering roles in London.

However, my yearly tuition fees are coming out to around £16,000. When you add London-area living costs on top of that, my finances are going to be quite tight. I need to know if taking on this financial risk is genuinely worth it.

I'd love some realistic insights from current students or alumni:

  • Placement Success: How active is the university in helping students secure placements directly within London's financial district/FinTech firms?
  • Financial Offset: What do the average salaries for paid placements look like? Does it realistically cover a significant portion of living expenses?
  • Reputation vs. Cost: Given the £16k investment, is the course's market reputation strong enough to compete with London-based universities during the hiring grind?
