If you respond to an agent from StreetEasy, does that count as hiring them?

I suspect that a lot of these listings are bait-and-switch.
If I send a request to a listing on StreetEasy, I get a response from a real estate agency. And if i continue with them, would I by default fall into the trap of paying them agent fees? (Ofc I wouldn’t sign anything, but if all listings on StreetEasy within my budget are like this, I may have to end up taking an offer from the agents?)
