Deciding which direction to go - English or Analyst?
I have a degree in English and a history of all sorts of jobs - customer service, fraud analyst, gift processing, and HR. My focus in my 20s was traveling so I went after work that allowed me a lifestyle balance rather than specific career path.
I currently work for a university in an accounting-adjacent administrative role and am looking for my next step. My true passion is proofreading and editing (hence the degree), and have been waiting for some kind of editing role to open up at the university, but in the meantime I have found that I really enjoy the project management and systems work in my current role. I’ve become a systems expert in my department and love being the point-person for systems questions and requests.
An opportunity to help out with business analyst work on my team and potentially transition that way down the line has come up, but I’m wondering whether to pursue the training and experience that comes with it, or to keep waiting for any opportunities in proofreading and editing. I could also pursue a masters degree in communications, but I don’t know if the time and energy for a potential lack of payoff would be worth it.
I’d love to stay at the university, and I know a direction doesn’t have to be forever, but I don’t know what direction to go in next.
