So today has been one of the most stressful and confusing days of my life and I genuinely don’t know what to make of it.
It started when I landed back in London and received a flood of WhatsApp messages from random people saying I had called them. I never did. My number was being spoofed.
A few hours later I got back to back notifications - someone trying to log into my Uber, TikTok, and Yahoo all within minutes of each other. Then I got notifications from Hinge and Bumble too. I don’t even have those accounts, so they were clearly trying to CREATE profiles using my number and identity, probably to run scams.
I also started getting calls from US numbers back to back which I didn’t pick up - I’m guessing those were automated verification calls from the apps they were trying to sign up to.
Then tonight while I was trying to set up 2FA on Yahoo, I got a text from a random US number saying “try cod 590 468.” Completely different code to what Yahoo sent me, so I didn’t do anything with it.
The thing that’s throwing me is I haven’t used this number for a week - I was in Dubai.
Is this a targeted attack or an automated bot from a data breach? And why dating apps I’ve never had?
TLDR: Number spoofed, multiple accounts attacked simultaneously, someone tried making dating profiles I don’t have, all while I was abroad and not using my number.
