Newbie Question - go easy.

Okay so I have a small amount of maintenance experience from my time commuting or longer bike rides.

But want to get into bike touring with an old steel touring bike.

Would it be reasonable enough or even feasible to modernise the gearing system on an older bike? For example, new cassette, derailleur and levers on the drop bars.

I was thinking hey, as a steel frame, they are very robust so why not upgrade rather than spend £1000 on a new bike.

Any info appreciated, thanks.
