Self employed people question in public accounting

Has anyone ever gotten their employer to allow them to work part time specifically so they could build a practice on their own in public?

I don’t see the point of paying a premium for something i could probably build on my own, especially when the firm doesn’t have the greatest “bench”… (employees are kind of tough to come by) plus i don’t really have the cash for a buy in. It is a 3-4 million dollar firm but the owners are the drivers of the good clients and i wouldn’t bet on them all sticking around when the owners retire (that’s my naturally skeptic mind talking)

A buddy of mine was able to do this and he’s convinced i would be successful. I’m not as convinced - his story is too good to be true. He scaled back with 4-5 monthly clients and didn’t even do any paid advertising…

Another mention - I’m sure i could get a great pay bump but nothing life changing. And the clients i have now would be held up by the non compete but the way i look at it is if they don’t let me work part time they can kiss that 50k goodbye because they won’t be staying.

Am i sounding rational or do i sound like a crack head?
