Hi everyone, I’m currently a first-year community college student planning to transfer to UCI. My goal is to pursue Business Administration with an Accounting emphasis, but I know the major is very competitive.

Because of that, I’m considering applying through TAG as Business Economics first, then possibly trying to switch into Business Administration later. I had a few questions and wanted to hear from people who’ve gone through this process or know how difficult it is:

  • Is switching from Business Economics to Business Administration at UCI realistically possible, or is it extremely difficult?
  • If I want the best chance to switch later, what should I prepare before transferring? (GPA, prerequisite classes, extracurriculars, etc.)
  • While studying Business Economics, can I apply for the Accounting minor at the same time?
  • If I’m unable to switch into Business Administration, would Business Economics + Accounting minor still be a strong path for accounting/CPA preparation?

I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thank you!

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to transfer to UCI and my goal is to become a CPA. I’m also planning to apply for the MPAc program at UCI after undergrad. Right now I’m deciding between applying for Business Administration vs. Business Economics (with an accounting minor).

I know Business Admin is the more direct path for accounting, but it’s also really competitive. Business Econ seems like a safer option, but I’m worried about whether the accounting minor + extra classes would be enough for CPA requirements, recruiting, and preparing for MPAc.

For those at UCI (especially Business Econ majors or accounting-focused students):

- Is Business Econ + accounting minor a good path for CPA and MPAc preparation?

- Was it hard to get accounting classes as a Business Econ student?

- Do recruiters or grad programs treat Business Econ differently from Business Admin?

Any advice would really help. Thanks!
