ive rewatched the untamed recently and i also watched the donghua right after (not the novel tho forgive me so its from memory) but i realise how different adaptions have different interpretations on the same events.
the untamed is much more emotional. i think its more like how wwx sees the events play out in his life, we get so much of the characters emotions but we dont really see much of the battles or much of his ghost path either imo. its more about wwx's relationships and actually paints him out to be much more morally good than he really is. on the other end of the spectrum is the donghua. its much more focused on the battle aspects and paints wwx as much darker of a person from the way his eyes glow red and the way he looses control. we dont see much of the emotional aspects probably because its so much more fast paced but also because the timeline takes place with wwx as mo xuanyu and has occasional flashbacks.
if you think about it the novel is probably the best middle ground. it shows more of wwx humour and we get to see the motivations and feelings of the character but it also does make him much darker than the untamed portrays him much more morally grey. its interesting to see how different media adapts the same source material. its not necessarily that one is better than the other nor that the more faithful the adaption the better is because simply a book and a drama or anime are wildly different and youre always going to have to change something lol.
