I have seen theories about how things ended up wrong before Subaru and Emilia came to Rom's place.

But I have always had a theory:

What if everything was going to end up okay, but in the moment Felt handled the insignia to Elsa, the insignia glowed up because of Felt's qualification.

And Elsa killed her and Rom because she was a Rival and a Thread for Rosswaals plans?

I'm assuming she wasn't ordered to kill them because she didn't seem like she would in the loop where Subaru screws up telling her why he wanted that insignia. At least not before Subarus confession.
