Spectrum ET2251 randomly rebooted during the day — is the modem failing?

I was in the middle of a work meeting today when everything suddenly froze and I lost my internet connection.

At first I thought it might just be my router or Wi-Fi, but when I went to check, I noticed that my modem was actually rebooting. I have a Spectrum ET2251.

The power light was blinking first, then the online/network light started blinking, and after a little while it became solid blue again. Once the modem finished booting, the internet came back normally.

This is not the first time this has happened. I remember having the same thing happen once before, although it doesn't seem to happen very frequently.

I'm trying to figure out what could cause an ET2251 to spontaneously reboot during normal use.

Could this be caused by:

  • the modem itself starting to fail?
  • overheating?
  • a power issue?
  • bad signal levels or noise on the coax line?
  • Spectrum remotely rebooting or updating the modem?
  • some kind of DOCSIS connection issue?

Is there anything specific to the ET2251 that I should be checking? I know Spectrum locks down access to a lot of modem diagnostics, so I'm also wondering whether support can see reboot history, signal issues, T3/T4 timeouts, or other events from their side.

Most importantly, does an occasional spontaneous reboot like this usually mean that the modem should be replaced, or would you wait until it starts happening more frequently?

The modem otherwise seems to work normally after it comes back online.

What are these boxes? Which company it belongs to?

AI said they're outdoor WiFi hotspot but it doesn't match with Spectrum hotspot map.

Location is NYC.

My building has Spectrum Mobile Wifi. Connecting to it, I got 800M down and 400M up.

I checked their website and it is not one of their outdoor hotspot, so this one must have come from somebody's home wifi.

Could it be possible that they finished high split and didn't turn it on for residential plans?

How could it be 400M upload without the high split?
