Will tuition fees for non-EU students increase over the next three years?
Hey everyone, I'm a 20-year-old from the Caribbean (Belize) who's seriously considering studying in Germany for my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering. I'm especially drawn to the low tuition fees and the idea of reaching C1 German (it sounds like a fun challenge, and I'd love the chance to read Nietzsche, Goethe, and Rilke in their original language.)
I've been studying German for about three months now, since I know public universities generally require C1 proficiency. I've already checked Anabin and confirmed that my high school diploma is equivalent to the German Abitur.
My main concern right now is the rise of the AfD (currently polling around 41% in Saxony-Anhalt). If they gain significant power, could they push through policies that raise tuition fees for international students? I understand education policy is handled at the state level and that only Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria currently charge higher fees for non-EU students. Still, I'm wondering: over the next three years (while I work and save for my blocked account), how likely is it that tuition at public universities will increase across Germany due to the current political shift? And if fees do rise, what's a realistic ceiling? (I know TUM currently charges non-EU students roughly €2,000–€4,000 per semester.)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Much love from Belize!
TL;DR: Are tuition fees at public German universities likely to increase significantly for non-EU students in the next 3 years, and if so, by roughly how much?
