6yo Shepsky / Husky after 2 years in…

We lost our family dog last year (14yo Aussie) that our boys grew up with. They’re ages 5-13, so after healing we decided to rescue.

Had a dog picked out until I met this girl.

Every time I walked past her she would lean against the crate. I used to tell myself I would never get a Husky bc of the shedding/vocals/stories I heard…

I had to ask one last question, so I went to the front and asked:

“Who is the longest tenured dog in the shelter?”

…lo & behold it was the friendly Husky BAYMAX!!!

Once I heard she had been in the shelter for TWO (2) YEARS, I wasn’t leaving without her.

Her name was Sugar Cookie but once we saw how sweet, gentle, and cuddly she was and my middle son suggested the name Baymax. It was perfect and she is perfect. Almost 😂

QUESTIONS for the experts…

Fast forward to nearly 6 months today!

Well that rescue who was the poster child for friendliness (they would take her to schools and shows bc she’s so good w/ strangers) had a bit of a switch flip!

  1. After about a week we couldn’t have visitors until we figured it out, bc the once extroverted Husky became super protective. We had to totally change introductions. Once Baymax sees us interact with the person and introduce them, they’re bffs. But it’s crazy! Is this normal?

  2. We have stairs and she REFUSES to go near them or up them. She started off extremely anxious so we shrank her world to just one room where she was most comfortable until she wanted to explore the home more. But she seems terrified of the stairs, but not the stairs, more so she seems scared of how we will respond to her being on them.

When we go out places or hiking, she bolts up and down stairs no problem 😂

I’m guessing there’s some trauma from previous owner but any suggestions? We would love for her to come upstairs for sleeping but we want her comfortable more than anything else.

  1. Her paperwork and the rescue said she’s a Shepsky, but we can’t find any paperwork or docs confirming or saying that. When I look at a Shepsky I feel like she doesn’t have the super long ears that they do, and the tail/body looks different? But what do you guys say?

Her nature is so interesting. She’s a cuddle bug but fiercely protective. Completely SILENT unless there’s a door knock in which case she barks. But she has never howled once in 6-months, and she’s never “spoken,” as I’ve infamously heard of!

But she is always Sunny Sibe Up, covers her nose, curls in a ball, is fiercely selective with her hearing, and needs a good reason to be obedient.

She is the most mild-natured dog I’ve ever had, yet still independent which I never experienced or understood. Super cool.

Anyways, thought I’d share what a treasure we found and see if anyone can bring some insight to the questions. Thanks!
