My dog died today while in the care of a sitter. I’m looking for others who have been through something similar.

I handed my dog over to the sitter at around 11:50 a.m. At 11:59 a.m., only about 9 minutes later, she tried to call me. At 12:03 p.m. she messaged me saying that my dog had “jumped out of the window” from the third floor.

I still do not know exactly what happened or how my dog was able to access an open window. I do not want to speculate beyond the facts I currently have.

I rushed back and found my dog lying outside on the ground, bleeding from the mouth. I immediately drove my dog to an emergency veterinary clinic. My dog arrived in cardiac and respiratory arrest and could not be saved.

I am completely devastated and still struggling to understand that this is real.

I have reported the incident and I am preserving all messages, call logs, veterinary records and GPS/tracker data. I am also trying to decide whether to make a police report and what steps to take next.

I am especially interested in hearing from people whose dog escaped, fell from a window or balcony, or died because of an apparent failure to keep the environment secure.

Please be gentle. This happened only today and my dog was very deeply loved.

Ce matin (15 août) vers midi, dans le quartier du vieux Lyon, un accident grave est survenu dans lequel mon chien, un berger américain miniature a été mortellement blessé. Je voudrais remercier les nombreuses personnes qui ont été présentes autour de lui pendant que je revenais le chercher. J'ai été touchée par cette présence. Je me suis sentie moins seule.

Il est décédé sur le chemin de la clinique vétérinaire, dans la voiture.

I would really like to hear from anyone whose pet was seriously injured or died while in the care of a sitter.

What did the plaftform do in your case? Did they investigate the sitter? Was the sitter removed from the platform? Did you file a police report or take legal action? Was there anything you wish you had done immediately after the incident?
