How to start with a home media server
I know this is probably a common question, but I have some specific things I want some advice on.
First, I had a home server for file backup, music, photos, and some movies using truenas that I bought used and it was going great, until one day it would not connect to the network, and I have no way to troubleshoot it since it has no HDMI output. My guess is the boot drive died or something.
But anyway, I want to start again from scratch using a mix of used and new parts but it's a little overwhelming where to start. I know I don't need anything crazy so I don't want to overspend, but I want something that's a small form factor, has at least 2 drives for RAID with at least 8 TB, and has enough memory/process power to run the services I want (jellyfin, navidrome, next cloud, immich, etc.). I also don't know how to choose between 2.5" or 3.5", SAS vs SATA, HDD vs SSD, enterprise vs consumer, etc.
As for OS, I want something that is simple and can run docker containers since that seems like the most foolproof and modern way to do it (correct me if I'm wrong).
TLDR; Please help a noob know what to buy to not overspend and how to make the choice between storage, OS, and other options.
Thank you!
Edit: I also wanted to ask about DDR4 vs DDR5 for RAM/ motherboard options. I'm leaning toward DDR4 for the cost but I didn't know if there was anything else I have to be aware of.
