So, I've been a critcrab fan for a while and wanted to share my story, I know my story is a mess, so sorry in advance
So two years back, I had just turned 21 and my cousin invited me to his D&D group because I showed interest in playing even though I was brand new to the scene back then. Well, trouble started from the start, at first it was small things, like the fact that my cousin made it seem like I was going to play 5e when in actuality, everyone at the table hated it so much because in their minds AD&D is superior (whatever, I didn't care even if I disagreed, though now I've become more open minded twords other systems) I wasn't upset by that, however it quickly became apparent that it was not a good table, and for reference, I'll name each player by their character names, or at least as close as I can get. You have the DM, you have my oldest cousin, literally playing Loki, my second oldest cousin playing a character called demitri, and a friend of the DM whose name I've forgotten, so I'll just call him the best descriptor for the wrong reasons, white knight.
So, I was brand new back then and struggled with everything (it doesn't help that I've had brain surgeries that have made it hard to learn some things), so the DM helps me make a character and doesn't tell me what I can do with it, it was some android race he basically ripped from another system (he does a lot of that as you'll see). And a little side note, the DM made his world basically a giant retexture of modules, keeping them the exact same but mashing them together and renaming things to make it loosely his own. So starting off, my character joins the group, and the DM immediately has the king come up to the group, Praise Loki, then threaten to kill my character for existing, and I kid you not, one session in, he forces my character into slavery (it wasn't even really a dark campaign). Well, basically immediately any fun I thought I would have, went out the window for the entire campaign after that (and before anyone asks, the reason I didn't just leave is because my cousin's father is close to my stepfather, and that's a completely different horrorstory for another time).
About three sessions out of the eight I was in, my second cousin comes to play, the DM let's him play a skyrim system with only the initiative modified to fit AD&D better, well, immediately it becomes clear he is overpowered for what we were facing (and for the record, the DM was throwing level 15-20 enemies at us at the time while we were level 5, with my character obviously having the worst stats). Well, demetri, my second cousin's character threw a shout in an enclosed space almost killing my character on multiple occasions, because that's what his character would do, and that isn't helped by the fact that every player had their character attempt to kill mine, or threaten too multiple times throughout the campaign just for being there, next up is mister white knight and he was overboard on a lot of things.
So the white knight player used racial slurs(a lot) any time he got a bad roll, half the time the DM just ignored it because they played together since they were kids, it's been a couple years, so I don't remember the a lot of what he would say, but it had things to do with race almost all the time. Luckily I only spent a couple sessions in the campaign, so I didn't have too hear it a lot, but it escalated by the day.
Now for the meatpie of the story, because on the last session of the campaign, I had found out, they had a discord server where Loki and the DM had been talking explicit ways to kill or torture my character specifically, and because people tend to believe I have a problem keeping up mentally, they also discussed taking advantage of me as a player, and I only found out because I was told so by them after the campaign had ended. And they absolutely hated giving me credit for anything or would just outright steal it. For example, the DM had made the big bad have not only equipment that basically gave infinite wishes, but made him untouchable, and he had 1000 INT, and I had found the one weakness of said character, and told the party so, and Loki basically just screamed it over me, then made a comment that implied how stupid I was (and for the record, the main villain was the DM's first character as I've heard that a million times over, and he'd been playing the same campaign over and over because noone could beat it for over like 20 years). And you absolutely couldn't do anything the DM didn't like, for example, one time, I was talking with my cousin, and I was like, oh, this character seems like an Anti-villain, not really having a serious conversation, and the DM screamed at me for using what he thought was a fake word, or when a character made a joke that made the whole table laugh, and the DM looked me dead in the eye, only me, and demanded to know if I was laughing in character because I didn't say out of character before I laughed, that table was an absolute mess. And even too this day, I have a hard time trusting groups I join on whether they'll talk about me behind my back, though I'm sure there's a table out there for me that I can trust one day.
