I am writing a story which features some French speaking characters - unfortunately, I don't speak the language myself. I have a super short piece of dialog I would like to translate.

"I would have liked to cross blades with you. I'm afraid we'll never get a chance to, now." (this is supposed to sound genuine and sincerely regretful; also this character is a native French speaker)

and the reply is

"A shame." (this is partially sincere, partially angry and cynical - it's complicated; this character is a native English speaker, but speaks French well)

For more context, if that helps, the story is set in 1408 England. I am aiming for a balance between modern language and old-sounding (not actual historic) language. The two characters speaking are knights who highly respect each other, but are on opposite sides of a conflict.

Let me know if more context is needed. Thank you in advance!
