Playing Time and Value Proposition on AA Teams

Having watched my son play midfield on a 2030 AA team for most of the year, I’ve noticed there are a number of midfield players — including my son — who get 2-3 minutes a game. And these are good players who had multiple AA offers after tryouts. The first line is better, but the drop-off to the second and third line is not dramatic. This is a top-20 team in the country.

Is this just the nature of the game itself, given all the specialization — LSMs, defensive short-stick middies, FOGOs — that midfield minutes at a high level are simply this scarce?

Do other parents feel like this is a lot to put into a sport — the travel, the hotels, the money — to watch your son play 2 -3 minutes per game?
