28M with a Marine Biology degree, currently a high school science teacher. I feel lost in my career and just want financial security and freedom.
I’m 28 and live in southeastern North Carolina. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology in 2021 and have been teaching high school science for almost five years.
I don’t hate teaching, but I’m struggling with the idea of doing it for another 30 years. I make around $50–55k annually, and between bills and everyday expenses, I feel like I’m barely getting ahead financially.
I have a lot of interests, including marine science, wildlife, technology, music, business, and working with my hands. I’m currently taking a GIS course through NC State to explore potential opportunities in that field.
I’ve also considered environmental consulting, marine surveying, healthcare, skilled trades, and entrepreneurship, but I struggle to commit to one direction.
I’m realizing that I don’t necessarily need to love my job. I want a career that allows me to enjoy my life outside of work.
My goals are financial security, a realistic path to earning $100k+, the ability to invest and eventually own a home, and enough freedom to travel and enjoy my hobbies.
I’m willing to change careers, earn certifications, or go back to school if the return on investment makes sense. However, I can’t afford to stop working entirely.
I’m also considering staying in teaching for the benefits and retirement while building a business or additional income streams.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? What career paths would you recommend for someone with my background?
I feel like I’ve spent too much time researching possibilities instead of committing to something. I just don’t want to reach 40 and regret not making a change sooner.
