What is the general consensus on The Gunslinger?

I am about 50 pages into it and am finding it to be more of a chore than I thought it would be.

Edit: Thanks everyone, these responses are great and very helpful. Cheers!

So randomly the only King books I have read are Revival and The Long Walk.

I want to read something that isn't Carrie, IT, The Shining etc. None of the famous movies essentially for now.

What do people recommend next? I loved Revival by the way and The Long Walk was good.
