Caught my co-worker redhanded killing the boss’ fishes..

Hi all, so awhile back.. i posted about taking up the shit from my AR colleague. https://www.reddit.com/r/coworkerstories/s/py7tHlnHpU

And today, i have an interesting one for everyone: crime or not i can’t say but it’s playing games with my mind tbh.

So rmb how I said I work in a small company and I’m the one handling Finance? Well, because it’s a small company, I was tasked with helping the boss feed his fish while he was away for about a month, 4 months or so ago. However, the fishes started dying the few days before he returned and honestly, i thought it was me cause i’m not a fish-person. Naturally, i bought new fishes to replace the dead ones before my boss came back (he paid me back when he found out🥲)

For the next 3 months, while my boss was already back, the fishes kept dying still.. There was one time in the 3 months when the fishes kept dying week on week, he ranted that maybe the office is not the right place (lack of sunlight, etc) for them since the plants and fishes kept dying yet, he shared that he had fishes at home for the past 20 years and the lighting was similar to the office but they were still alive. The dead fishes was odd to me, like, them dying was an anomaly because every time the fishes died, he bought something different to improve the conditions: better oxygen tank thing to recycle the water, water droplets, etc.

And because MY fishes (the one i had bought) had died too.. i felt pretty invested in the whole fiasco. I noted the weeks in which there were fishes in the tank over the weekend and when there wasn’t (the water needs time to adjust after a dead fish is found in it) *this presence of fishes is important for later*

So, with deductive reasoning I thought that if it was not the tank, water, fish food, water plants, or anything related to the tank, not the environment, could it be something external?

I requested for the CCTV footage citing some other reason to check on some finance thing lol 😂 okay, unethical ik! But omg, i found the fish killer!!

Over the past 3 months, i found footage of one particular colleague who was spraying hand sanitizer into the fish tank! And one thing i noted was his infrequency with sanitizing the office whenever he stayed late. So i wondered if this was even his assigned task since he actually works in a diff dept and cleaning was arranged externally.

I checked with a senior in the co (cause i hadn’t been employed long enough to know everyone’s detailed tasks) and apparently this staff was asked to spray sanitizer whenever he left work the last on Fridays. The boss had allowed him to stay later due to traffic congestion otw home (instead of spending time at a cafe, wasting money just to get coffee or a drink) he was given office keys to chill at the office while waiting for the traffic to clear. When I reviewed the footage, e.g. he stayed back every Friday for all 3 months but only sprayed sanitizer off and on.

Guess what the “off and on” coincided with!!! To everyone who figured it out: YES, only when there were fishes in the tank, he “did his task” of sanitizing the office. But whenever there weren’t fishes, he DID NOT sanitize the office.

As*h*le made a big show of spraying the office “thoroughly” whenever he DID spray probably to appear normal when spraying at the tank…

I told my boss the theory of hand sanitizer and suggested that he place a hidden camera to catch the staff’s action from up close in the act. I was almost sure that he wouldn’t believe me but i put my neck out for the fishes cause they were helpless and dying for literally no reason. To my credit 🥲 like, he believed me (not even a 2 year staff) vs this staff of 7 years!! But instead of a secret camera, he put it on a super obvious place and I also swapped out the sanitizing liquid for water jic the guy DID end up spraying.

Today, this Monday is the first time in 3 months, the fishes have survived over the weekend! I know it’s silly but i am so happy that they are alivee. As for that staff.. idk what’s gonna happen now
