PhD by Publication a Good Idea?

Hello, I am doing some preliminary research and considering whether it might make sense to do a PhD by prior publication. I have 10 cited works, including 7 papers and 3 patents. I am currently working in my field in industry.

PhD by prior publication is a more common route in Europe than North America, where I am based. Basically, no new research is done and no new thesis is written in this route. Instead, you simply defend your existing published work as equivalent to a doctoral contribution. It seems feasible based on the fact that there are some universities open to external applicants, and it can be done remotely.

I am curious if anyone else has done this and could share their experience or advice about whether it is a good idea. My field is computing.

Thanks!
