I recently picked up a non-DJI drone and was pretty hyped to show my friends. But almost every reaction I got was basically: "Why didn't you just get a DJI?"

And that kind of stuck with me more than I expected. Because before buying, I actually did a decent amount of research. And yeah, DJI is still kind of the obvious leader in a lot of ways. Stability, ecosystem, reliability, all great. But at the same time, I noticed there are a bunch of non-DJI drones now that aren't just budget knockoffs anymore. Some of them are genuinely competitive in specific areas, like 4K/60fps footage, obstacle avoidance systems that feel more beginner-friendly, and feature sets that sometimes punch above their price point.

And yet the conversation still tends to default to: lower price = cheaper alternative to DJI, instead of "this might actually fit different use cases better." What's interesting is even YouTube has started shifting a bit. Some channels are now actually reviewing brands like Skyrover and Potensic seriously instead of just doing the usual "DJI vs everything else" comparison for clicks.

So I'm curious where people draw the line now: What does a non-DJI drone actually need to do before it stops being seen as just a "budget alternative" and becomes something people would seriously put on a shortlist?
