Scam ft. Microsoft, UltraViewer, remote desktop (US)

Yesterday I was asked to help figure out why my dad's laptop couldn't connect to the internet. I checked the modem and it's fine and as soon as I get upstairs I find my dad on the phone with someone claiming to be from Microsoft, even provided a name and employee id #. I had a bad feeling about that, and if compounded when I hear my dad say he had been online and a message popped up on the screen from Microsoft stating he had been hacked and should call the number listed. So he does just that, and is told to install UltraViewer for remote desktop support. This is when someone or something deleted the wireless network adapter drivers from his laptop. My dad was also accused of downloading disturbing content. Due to all this, 8 guess I'm wondering should I wipe the laptop and reset it or just fix the drivers issue? There's a lot more what you read that happened but I already rambled enough.
