Decision Regarding my Admissions fr 2026

Should I take a loan to self‑fund a pre‑PhD program, or accept a funded master’s I’m not excited about?

I’m trying to decide between two options and would really appreciate your advice.

Option A: Pre‑PhD research program (tuition‑free but self‑funded stay)

This is a strong, well‑regarded pre‑PhD style program at what seems like a good university.

Tuition is covered, but I would need to take an education loan to cover my living costs and stay.

My hope is that doing well here will significantly strengthen my profile for top‑10 PhD programs later.

Option B: Master’s program with stipend

This is a different master’s program that offers a stipend covering all my expenses.

I would not pay anything out of pocket, but I’m not very excited about this program or the university.

However, it would give me a structured 1–2 years of coursework and research.

My long‑term goal is to get into a very strong PhD program (ideally top‑10 worldwide). I already hold an MSc in Physics, so going for another master’s degree feels a bit strange, especially if it doesn’t align with my real interests.

My questions for the community:

Is it worth taking a loan to attend the pre‑PhD program (self‑funded stay) if it can boost my chances for a top‑10 PhD later?

Or is it safer to go for the funded master’s program even though it’s not my first choice?

Given that I already have a master’s, is pursuing another master’s still a good move if my main aim is a high‑rank PhD?

Any advice based on your experiences or what you’ve seen in similar situations would be really helpful.

Living cost enquiry

Hi everyone,

Is anyone here from Trieste or currently living there as a student?

I’m an international student and I’ll probably be moving to Trieste soon for one yr long research program. My tuition is fully covered, but I’ll have to manage my own living expenses.

I wanted to ask honestly — what is the real cost of living in Trieste for a student?

If I arrive with only around €300 initially, approximately how long could I survive there realistically? I’m okay with living very modestly/shared accommodation/student housing.

Also:

  • Is it possible for international students to find part-time jobs there?
  • What kind of jobs are usually available?
  • How difficult is it without speaking fluent Italian?
  • Are there any student support programs, food assistance, temporary housing help, or scholarships for living costs?
  • What is the minimum monthly amount needed just for rent + food?

I would really appreciate practical advice from people actually living there, especially international students.

Thank you so much.

Club activities Enquiry

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming/master’s student in Physics at University of Manitoba and I wanted to ask about student clubs and activities at UM. Are clubs open to master’s students as well, or are most activities mainly for undergrads? Do students usually have to pay membership fees to join clubs?

Residence Advice

Hi, I’m considering applying for Arthur V. Mauro Residence (AVM) at the University of Manitoba. I’ll be 24 years old when I start, so I think I meet the age requirement. I read that AVM is mainly for upper-year or 22+ students. University of Manitoba I wanted to ask: Is AVM a good place for graduate/international students? Is it generally safe? Is it easy to meet people there, or is it more isolated/private? Do students usually hang out in each other’s rooms, do group study sessions, cook together, etc.? Would you recommend AVM over other residences? Also, how safe does Winnipeg feel overall for students? I’ve seen many comments online about crime rates, so I’m a bit nervous since I’ll be moving there alone from another country. Any advice would help a lot.

Incoming International Student

Hi everyone, I’ll probably be joining the University of Manitoba this year as an international graduate student in physics, and I had a few questions about student life there. How intense is the academic pressure in physics? How heavy are homework assignments and exams? Is it manageable to maintain some social life and hobbies alongside studies? Do students usually feel constantly stressed, or is there a decent balance? Also, how are the professors in general? Are they approachable and supportive? Do they respond well when students ask questions or need help? Is the environment more friendly or competitive? I would really appreciate honest opinions from current or former students. Thanks!
