Daughter registering for U1 this week

any advice I can pass her way? She’s looking at social work but is doing U1. Any courses or teachers to avoid? Anything like that? Just a concerned parent trying to help! Thanks!

Shut this subreddit down and rename it to r/FirstYearEngSchedules

I'm starting to miss all of the down bad posts. Might have to make an alt account and make some relationship posts to dilute all the "is my schedule ok" and "NURSING HELP" posts.

First year Eng courses

I’m currently choosing my first year Eng classes and I’m not sure if the workload will be too much or what. I know the degree is supposed to finish in 5 years so that’s the goal as well to keep in mind. I was planning to take 5 courses in first term and 6 in second and if I can handle 5 well I’ll take 6 if not I’ll drop to 5. Any advice at all regarding my courses would be very helpful.

Courses

Fall
◦ Math 1510+lab
◦ Chem 1100
◦ Physics 1050+lab
◦ Comp 1012+lab
◦ Eng 1440+lab

Winter
◦ Math 1710+lab
◦ Chem 1122 (lab) (winter only)
◦ Eng 1430+lab
◦ Math 1210+lab
◦ Eng 1460+lab
◦ Eng 1450+lab

Courses left
◦ Elective (Phil 1290/1490 or French) (summer if online?)
◦ Written (first sems second year)

Is it worth it to go for an honors program in psychology for a PhD?

I'm aware that the psychology graduate program is extremely hard to get into and I want to make my chances as big as possible. The biggest difference to me atm since I'm going into year 2 is the increase in science courses for the honors program. I honestly do not want to have all my classes be science courses but I will deal with it if it is my best chance at getting a PhD. If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated!!

Biol 2520 with Jae-Hyeok Lee

Hey guys, did anyone take Biol 2520 with Jae-Hyeok Lee? If so, how was it? Rate MyProf is scaring me to death. I actually don't know if I'll get him but I have to take this course in fall and for the last two years he's been teaching. (and there's only one class offered then) So if you've taken the course with him, what can be the best way to prepare since I don't really have a choice.

STAT 2300/3380

Hi everyone,

I have taken many psych and bio/chem courses and want to minot in stats. I have 2 courses left to take.

Does anyone have experience with STAT 2300 and 3380? I need a relatively light course load and dont want to take these if they are very difficult/time consuming.

I'm planning to take both in the same semester (fall), do you think this is manageable? 3380 is with Andrew morris and 2300 doesn't have a prof assigned yet.

Thank you!

French courses difficulty level

Can someone tell me how difficult the French courses are at the u of M? I speak very little french but I'm willing to learn over them summer and put in extra work. Would is be a very bad idea for me to take Intermediate French 1? My family suggests I do a minor in French and thats one of the required courses

Looking to make some friends

Hey! 👋 I'm a 23M looking to make some new connections. I've tried meeting new people through dating apps and have had some success, I went on a few dates too but nothing serious has come from them so far.

A little about me: I'm a full-time student at university and I also work full-time, so life keeps me pretty busy. That said, I'd love to meet some new people to hang out with, grab a coffee, explore the city, or just spend time together whenever we have some free time.

If you're interested in getting to know each other, feel free to send me a message!

Kinda worried about second semester time table

Is my second semester time table too much. I’m hoping to join band too so I’ll be doing my every tuesday and work as well. The three hour labs are a lot ngl. Kinda stressed. Also first semester might drop chem and take in summer

Northern lights are out!

A little faint with the bright city lights, but the northern lights are out! Took this picture at 12:10am.

Would it be too HEAVY having 2 three hour labs along with Calculus 2 in the same term? I'm a high school graduate, going right into faculty of science, but is planning to advance entry into Engineering in the second year.

From my previous post, someone recommended me to have my eng courses in the main year because "lots of people are taking them and working on them together. Better to take course like phil/english in the summer where you won’t have to put that much effort it. Lots of “hard” courses offered in the summer are people retaking who failed and WILL be slacking off and just trying to do better in exams."

Couldnt do anything in Fall Term, but I can shove an eng 1430 in my winter term. Still dont know if the workload will be A LOT or just enough to handle...

I also had NO experience with computer science but I'm having it in winter term as well

What do you think of this timetable plan? I will be going into Faculty of Science (starting from fall 26) and hopefully getting an advanced entry into Engineering (Mech)

This is a draft schedule. I wanna make sure it sets me up well for my program and doesn't create any problems down the road. Also, I'm planning to do Eng 1430 and 1440 in the summer, since they both have a 3hr lab.
That being said, I still got a ton of things that I'm unsure of...
My goal was to balance my workload and minimize long gaps. Do you see any section combinations that would work better?
Does COMP 1012 usually have weekly programming assignments? About how many hours per week should I expect outside class?
For Calc 2 in the Winter Terms, would you recommend the 8:30 section or the 1:00 section? Is one generally a better fit with Physics and Computer Science?
If my preferred sections are full, which alternatives would you recommend?

one more thing, i was checking for the summer courses from this year just so i can get a ref to how it would be in the next year. But for the engineering courses, there are only lectures avaliable with no labs, while in fall terms, labs are avaliable. How does that work?

Is it possible to switch classes once I'm registered in one?

I'm considering taking MATH 1300 and two professors are listed on the browse classes page. I looked both of them up on rate my professors and both of them seem to have pretty negative ratings. I was wondering if I could change my class to the other one with the different professor if I want to later on? Much appreciated.
