My Twitter/X email got changed out of nowhere and I can’t get my account back
I don’t really know where to post this but I’m honestly kind of panicking and hoping someone has dealt with something similar before. A few months ago I got a virus on my computer and I noticed some weird activity across a few of my accounts at the time. I tried to clean everything up properly, ran multiple antivirus scans, removed anything suspicious, changed passwords, and basically did everything I could think of to make sure it was gone. Things seemed fine after that, so I assumed it was resolved, but now I’m not so sure it actually fully left.
Today I suddenly received an email saying that the email linked to my twitter account had been changed. The strange part is I was literally using the app about 10 minutes before that email came through and everything looked completely normal. No warnings, no signs, nothing. As soon as I saw the email I tried to log back in, but I immediately ran into issues with authentication. It keeps asking for backup codes or an authenticator code, but I don’t have my backup codes saved anywhere and I don’t have access to an authenticator that works for it. Even the codes I can see in my iPhone passwords or settings don’t seem to work, it just keeps saying incorrect code every time I try. I’ve retried it a bunch of times thinking maybe I was doing something wrong or it was lagging, but nothing changes.
I also contacted X support, but I got a response basically saying the account doesn’t exist or can’t be found, which doesn’t make sense to me at all because I was just using it minutes before all of this happened. I’m wondering if maybe I’ve been locked out because I tried logging in too many times or something like that. What’s even more confusing is that I’m still receiving password reset and account related emails to the same email address, so it still seems linked in some way, but I just can’t access the account itself anymore.
I’ve already changed my email password and secured everything I can on that side, but I still don’t understand how someone could have changed the email on my Twitter account without going through my email first. It makes me think maybe my device is still compromised in some way even though I tried to remove everything months ago. Right now I’m completely stuck, I’ve contacted support but haven’t gotten anything helpful back, and I honestly don’t know what else to do or how to get my account back.
