Has anyone successfully appealed a WSIB decision regarding PTSD after a workplace assault?

I work in healthcare. I was physically assaulted multiple times by the same patient, with two assaults resulting in concussions. The patient also repeatedly threatened me and my coworkers.
I was diagnosed with PTSD by a psychiatrist in May 2026, and WSIB has the psychiatrist’s report on file. However, I’ve been fighting with my caseworker because WSIB has accepted the anxiety/depression aspect of my claim but has not accepted the PTSD diagnosis, despite having the diagnosis and supporting documentation.
My PTSD symptoms have significantly affected my ability to return to work and my life outside of work, including severe panic attacks, hypervigilance, nightmares, avoidance, and social withdrawal.
I recently submitted my Intent to Appeal and am trying to figure out what to expect from here.
Has anyone else dealt with something similar with WSIB? Did you successfully get PTSD accepted on appeal? What evidence or documentation helped your case? What was the appeal process like?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this, especially in Ontario.

WSIB PTSD/Concussion Claim – Looking for Advice & Experiences

Hi everyone. I’m hoping to hear from people who’ve had a similar experience with WSIB in Ontario.

I’m a healthcare worker and have had two accepted WSIB concussion claims after being assaulted by patients at work. My first concussion was in February 2025, and my second was in November 2025. Following my second injury, I was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and PTSD.

My physical concussion symptoms have improved, but my PTSD became the biggest challenge. I started having panic attacks at work, nightmares about the assault, and eventually my anxiety spread outside of work as well.

What I’m really struggling with now is the WSIB process. During my second claim, I felt pressured to return to work before I felt mentally ready, and it feels like the focus has been on my physical recovery while my PTSD hasn’t been fully understood. I’m finding the claim process incredibly stressful.

I’m hoping to hear from people who have dealt with WSIB for PTSD, post-concussion syndrome, or multiple workplace injuries.
- Did WSIB recognize your PTSD as part of your claim?
- Did anyone else feel pressured to return to work before they were ready?
- Did you have to appeal decisions or involve the Fair Practices Commission or the Office of the Worker Adviser?
- If your PTSD became worse over time rather than immediately after the injury, how did WSIB handle that?
- How did your claim ultimately turn out?

I’m just looking for others’ experiences—not legal advice. This process has been overwhelming, and I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar.
Thank you. ❤️
