Husband being charged with assault— 3rd degree.

So I have never posted on reddit before but I have also never been in a situation like this in my life. I am confused and don’t know where else to turn as no one or myself has ever been arrested.

My husband was just arrested a couple of hours ago. Around 1 AM, our neighbors were playing really loud music and I am nine months pregnant, so he went over there and asked them to turn the music down, politely. They turned it down for like 30 seconds and then turned it back on again. We filed noise complaints and the authorities sent no one over so he went back over there and asked again. They got very defensive and started cursing him out and he was doing the same— bc he had work and . They were drinking on the pavement and had a boombox so he started recording them. They started saying he can’t record them and eventually one out of the 6 guys smacked the phone out of his hand. He swung back at the guy but didn’t really hit him. As he was walking back and on the phone with cops, (while also arguing) they threw their beer bottle at him. At this point, he took his glasses off and picked one of the guys up, slammed him on the floor and pinned him down. I called the cops like 4 times. They took so long to show up. One of the guys had a wood and was chasing him also. We waited for the cops because I genuinely didn’t see any way he was wrong. They assaulted him first. I was shocked when they came back after talking to the other guy and only arrested my husband. He has never been arrested before. The cops seemed very dismissive, as if they weren’t trying to hear what was actually going on. They heard the story of the five guys and assumed my husband was looking for trouble. I am at a loss and don’t know what to do. Should i get a lawyer? It’s soooo expensive. $8k is A LOT of money and we’re expecting so I have no clue what to do here. HELP.

Should I just go with the public defender?
