Theory : how to study previous chapters while keeping current with new chapters

Hi everyone! I've had this issue for a while now and I really need some help with it this. I'm wondering how to studying previous chapters in a timely manner (not taking all day for one chapter, for example) and seeing how I can study for multiple previous chapters in one day. I'm really at a loss about how to do this without taking all day on 1-2 chapters and this is really holding me back from progressing.

One strategy that I've used that still takes forever is when I use the Magnum steno book and go down the list and for any words I don't know I put it in my problem list (which also takes a long time) and then I practice the chapter in sentences (I already made audios for all the chapters. So I go down the list and play the sentences as I relearn some of the material). I thought it would be as easy as playing the audio I created and I can review it that way and move onto the next chapter but it isn't like that. There are some things that I have forgotten or don't even remember studying.

There absolutely must be a more efficient way to study because I keep getting hung up on one chapter at a time. Please help!!

Thank you so much in advance!

HELP - Connecting Writer to Case CAT

My writer won't connect to my software when I try to open a new realtime file. Apparently Microsoft has disabled the drivers that connect our writers to Case CATalyst. Before I call Stenograph and spend all day on hold, has anyone found a solve for this yet?

Is this program legitimate? Many questions here

Hey guys, I am looking at an online program at my community college for digital court reporting and legal transcription. The main reason I am uncertain is because of the terminology, and I just started researching this field because I heard there is a way to do freelance legal transcription with the correct certifications. I am interesting in steno or voice writing, too, but some people have said steno/voice writing and digital reporting are different, some say they are the same, I don't know what certifications are taken the most seriously, etc. Confusing as hell. I have seen some people say not all schools are legit, too.

Is there even a demand for people prepping legal transcripts from audio files, or is that a misrepresentation of current practices?

This is a quote from the program page: "Transcribers create hard copies of dictation given to them, usually by attorneys, either by live transcription or working from audio files." Is this not just stenography? Why not call it that? Are we just using interchangeable terms or is this referring to different certifications/levels of clearance, etc?

I am looking for a career path that suits me as a chronically ill person, so I am drawn to the freelance and remote aspect, but I need more details. This is in WI and is a legit community college that I know offers other legitimate courses, it is where everyone in my area goes for nursing and welding, etc. This is a different and changing field though, I am well aware it could change more with AI, so I need more opinions. I don't think AI can ever remove this field due to confidentiality laws, but who knows.

This is called "Digital Court Reporter and Legal Transcription" and you prep for the following exams; Certified Electronic Reporter (CER) and Certified Electronic Transcriber (CET) exams offered by the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT). It's online and self paced.

Please tell me your thoughts. I'm super curious about all of this but very confused right now. I want invest my time and money in the right school and certification for me.

Realtime writers, what type of clients hire you? Is it that deponents also are the ones hiring you?

New reporter mid-editing yet another transcript where the deponent is digging their own graves OTR. It just hit me that attorneys might hire realtime services to avoid this, is that a thing?

The extent of my thoughts on realtime was that it must only be $$$ lawyers for $$$ cases that request it...also, do the deponents also request their own feed too? Or attorneys who know their deponent is dumb do for them?

Realtiming is my goal...fingers crossed I'll get there in some years.

Reassure me, please

I am a current steno student in speeds, working on 140. I’ve passed my 140 JC but now I’m working on Lit to be able to pass a test soon, I hope. I’m just feeling a little … inadequate? Because I feel like my fingers are FLYING at 140 and it’s really making me doubt how I’ll ever be able to get to 200+. I just want to know that everyone felt that way, too. That my brain maybe is perceiving my hands as flying but actually there’s a whole other level of flying that I’ll be able to achieve. I want to believe I’ve got this, but it’s hard not to doubt myself at times.

New potential steno student (help?)

I’m considering going to school for stenography this fall. I’m a single mom in Portland, OR and I work full time for a law firm. I’m aware this would be a massive undertaking so I’ve signed up for Project Steno and purchased a stenoob as well to see if this is something I really want.

However, I’m worried I won’t be able to make a living freelancing. Stability is very important to me, but being a single mom with no child support I’m very scared to make any moves. Right now we’re making do, but I can’t afford a car, I can’t put much away for my daughter’s future. I have time to practice and she’s aging out of our state funded daycare in 5 years. I’ll still be working while I get certified but it’s after I’m scared of!

What was your experience the first year court reporting? I can’t seem to find many numbers, I’ve seen anywhere from $60k/year to well over $100k. My current position caps out at $70k/year and it’s just not enough for what I want to give to my daughter.

Transcription company VIQ causes "national security risk" in Australia. The vendor always promised security and confidentiality, and the government always believed them.

I have two different articles about this to share. Same story, different writers.

Article here may be paywalled: https://www.afr.com/companies/professional-services/court-transcription-giant-collapses-sending-lawyers-scrambling-20260604-p60436

Article here should not be paywalled: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-05/viq-solutions-australia-court-transcription-winding-down/106763466

In November 2025, lawyers and (some) judges had been complaining about the transcripts. But also some judges were creating what litigants might see as problems or inaccuracies in transcripts. It seems to me that this was doable because the contract with VIQ explicitly allowed for it rather than, you know, a single person holding the burden of accuracy. Source: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-29/family-court-transcripts-viq-solutions/105904558

But I'm not Australian. For all I know, transcripts and "the record" are thought of differently.

My main point here is that the pinky promise of confidentiality is never enough, but people making deals with these vendors pretend that it is.

Husband being charged with assault— 3rd degree.

So I have never posted on reddit before but I have also never been in a situation like this in my life. I am confused and don’t know where else to turn as no one or myself has ever been arrested.

My husband was just arrested a couple of hours ago. Around 1 AM, our neighbors were playing really loud music and I am nine months pregnant, so he went over there and asked them to turn the music down, politely. They turned it down for like 30 seconds and then turned it back on again. We filed noise complaints and the authorities sent no one over so he went back over there and asked again. They got very defensive and started cursing him out and he was doing the same— bc he had work and . They were drinking on the pavement and had a boombox so he started recording them. They started saying he can’t record them and eventually one out of the 6 guys smacked the phone out of his hand. He swung back at the guy but didn’t really hit him. As he was walking back and on the phone with cops, (while also arguing) they threw their beer bottle at him. At this point, he took his glasses off and picked one of the guys up, slammed him on the floor and pinned him down. I called the cops like 4 times. They took so long to show up. One of the guys had a wood and was chasing him also. We waited for the cops because I genuinely didn’t see any way he was wrong. They assaulted him first. I was shocked when they came back after talking to the other guy and only arrested my husband. He has never been arrested before. The cops seemed very dismissive, as if they weren’t trying to hear what was actually going on. They heard the story of the five guys and assumed my husband was looking for trouble. I am at a loss and don’t know what to do. Should i get a lawyer? It’s soooo expensive. $8k is A LOT of money and we’re expecting so I have no clue what to do here. HELP.

Should I just go with the public defender?

FVAP v Superior Courts. How serious is this for court reporting?

I’m a court reporting student in CA looking into the FVAP v Superior Courts of California case. From what I understand, it’s about using electronic recording when a court reporter isn’t available. How big of an impact do you guys think this could actually have on the profession? Is this likely a real step toward replacing reporters? Should I be worried about this?

Would appreciate insight from anyone more familiar with the legal/court reporting world. Thank you!

Voice Writers using CaseCatalyst and Dragon

Are there any voice writers using Dragon and Case? I'm a new official and everyone so far uses Eclipse. I was trained using Case and am so hesitant to switch because of the learning curve on top of energy being a new official will take. I'd love to connect with other writers on CaseCat to stare tips and tricks

Speak Your Truth: There is a legislative push to bring 47.1 to New York.

There is a legislative push to bring 47.1, otherwise known as the Speak Your Truth law, to New York. The law has come to our attention through a recent ‘Hollywood‘ legal drama.

I’m seeing an increasing number of Reddit posts calling for the public to request changes to this potentially life-changing law. I’m also seeing an increasing number of Reddit posts asking the public to reach out to sponsors, committee chairs and members to object to the Speak Your Truth law.

In my view, it’s not OK that us Redditors are being inundated with posts from those opposing the new law. Personally, I support the Speak Your Truth Law.

Please take the opportunity to educate yourselves and find out what you can do to support other people speaking their truth.

ETA: If anyone is having issues with this link, I think it’s possible that the site has been completely overwhelmed. Please be patient.

Looking to become a court reporter but worried about scams

So as a background, I used to do voice captioning for CaptionCall (phone calls for the deaf and HOH) and I did voice captioning for live television with Vitac before news stations all moved away from human captioning, so I'm well versed in voice writing.

I've been wanting to get back into captioning and someone mentioned court reporting since it's relatively similar to what I've done in the past. They recommended TrueScript Institute and I checked them out, but they seem hella new for how much they charge, so I'm a little nervous dropping so much money on them (if anyone knows whether they're legit, let ya girl know).

I've been trying to research the best way to start as a court reporter, but the options feel so overwhelming when I look at the lists on NVRA. Is there an institute that's better than the others, especially if you're already relatively familiar with voice writing using Dragon or is it just "choose whichever looks good and whichever has a price point you're comfy with?"

I miss captioning and this career is so appealing to me but I also don't wanna lose a ton of money to an "institute" looking to cash in on the TikTok popularity of court reporting videos lol.

Passing skills test less than 90 days

Disclaimer: I will not be working upon certification!! I want to have at least 80 hours on the job shadowing, and perfect transcripts before I take on work for any kind of income. I have a great mentor who is a machine writer and very supportive of my ambitions as well as helping me to just be great. I don’t want anyone to think I’m saying certification means work right away lol.

Okay here are some pictures to show how quickly it’s been from the start of enrollment- not to mention I didn’t even start classes until first week of my March because I was waiting on equipment to arrive in the mail…

Obviously I have not sat for the RPR so I have nothing to show, but I will update this group and include my results if or when I pass that :)

It’s probably not very noteworthy to most of you for whatever reason, but to me, passing the skills test when I thought I wouldn’t just made me realize that my hard work in learning both methods of reporting has been paying off, and it reminded me that maybe after all of this hard work I will be certified soon. I think it’s not healthy to have the absolute mindsets of something being impossible… some things cannot be done but that doesn’t mean just because you say it can’t be done it is automatically impossible.

None of this even matters if I don’t pass my exams, I just wanted to share in this community that I was excited to be putting my best foot forward. Life has kicked me down in so many ways and I have been able to get through many trying seasons even at my young age. So there’s no need to be rude, and I wasn’t trying to offend anyone with my timeline and how long I’ve spent on the machine. Anyway if any of you want to send me any positive vibes, I’d really appreciate that, I am just a girl after all so I don’t want to be bullied on Reddit for trying to share something positive okay I am sorry!! 😂😩
