Readbacks

Sorry if this is a dumb question bu I'm finding that I know how to write certain briefs and phrases on my machine but I don't know how to do the readback, either because I forgot it or it looks foreign. Would you suggest that I just go through each and every single chapter one by one and practice readbacks that way?

What content should I consume daily to get smarter?

I have a deep history with trauma and had been in survival mode my entire childhood and adult life. Therefore, I missed out on learning so much about the world and about society in general. In order to be a well-rounded person (or try to be), what kinds of content should I consume on a daily basis? Preferably YouTube channels if possible. I take notes while watching YouTube. I read physical, fiction books only which is the reason I did not mention any books here. Thanks for your help!!

How to only focus on dictations instead of internal monologue

Hi there! I'm curious to find out how to focus on the words from dictation rather than my own inner monologue. It gets really distracting because my mind tells me I can't do it (even though I believe I can), and my brain keeps going on about how fast the speed is or how I don't know this word, etc. Could someone please help? I really need to get this under control. I'm a machine writer, btw. Thanks so much!!

Looking for insight about how to practice older theory material

Hi there! I am a theory student and I'm mostly self teaching in a self paced program. My question is after I practice material from my theory book a few times, should I just start creating my own dictations? Do you have any tried and true methods for studying multiple chapters in one day? Could you please share your practice routine with me? I'm getting nervous with the material I'm forgetting from previous chapters. Thanks for your input!

How do I stop beating myself up (theory practice)

How do I stop beating myself up over every mistake I make while practicing? I have a history of trauma and being called stupid and slow and I sometimes can't help but feel stupid and slow for not getting it quickly enough. What kinds of things should I be telling myself while I practice? It also feels like problem word lists are never ending. Also, how do you build resilience while practicing? I feel like I have a defeatist mindset and want to give up easily. Thanks for your help!

Social anxiety/self judgement and Toastmasters

Hi everyone! I have difficulties with judging myself as I am actively speaking which makes it hard to focus on what the speaker is saying and it is also difficult for me to know how to respond. The self judgment while speaking is a huge problem for me. I say a lot of "ums" and I stutter and stammer a lot. I have been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (adhd and depression) for the past 20 of so years, but the social anxiety is really what causes me the most problems in my life. Is it too late for me? I just joined Toastmasters as a member and I hope it will help me be able to think on my feet and stop with all the self judgement and self critical thoughts while I am speaking about "saying the right things" and "speaking eloquently". Thank you for any help!

When dictations are on play, I panic

I panic at times. No matter how easy the dictation is, I panic because I don't know what's coming. What should I be telling myself? I don't really have a conscience telling me to relax becaus everything is moving so quickly during dictation. What do I do to resolve this issue?

9 month timeline (self teaching)

If you only had 9 months from starting theory to speed building while self teaching, what would your daily practice routine look like? Would it change in a day-to-day basis or stay the same? How would you incorporate audios in your daily practice? What do you think of hardcopy? I listened to Lady Steno's student of the month, who got to 225 in 10 months but just wanted more feedback from others here.

Thank you for your help!

Anxiety while in theory

Is it natural to have anxiety while in theory? I already have anxiety issues which impacts my steno output, but does the anxiety ever go away? I have been told it will once I build up my confidence in steno but what about forgetting when I am overwhelmed? Sometimes I freeze when I hear an unfamiliar word or words and I drop a lot. How can I resolve this? Thank you in advance!!

Inner dialogue non existent except for negative thoughts

Hi. Throughout my day, if I don't have anything to think about, my mind goes to songs from my past or it thinks about past failures. How do I have an internal dialogue that guides me and helps me instead?

Brief practice after a long while

How do you practice briefs that you haven't practiced in a while? Is it a slow process? How do you do it? I am finding it hard to remember some briefs that I once felt confident on and don't have the time to really practice like I should. TIA!

How to be well rounded and build my personality

How do work on/build my personality everyday? I don't have much money so I can't do classes or attend any workshops. I feel that I lack a personality due to trauma from my past and I don't know how to catch up in life. I don't know what kinds of things I should be doing to become more knowledgeable as a person everyday. I use YouTube a lot and I read fiction books but would like to find out what I should be watching or reading (non self help books) to educate myself so I can have a well rounded personality. Thanks for your help!
