It happened to me. Closing on our first home Friday. Lost $50k to a wire scam today. Still shaking.
I've seen these posts on here and always thought "how does someone fall for that." Now I know. We're closing on our first home last Friday. That morning we got an email from our title company saying everything was ready and included the wire instructions for closing costs. Same email address. Same names. Same signatures. Literally identical to every other email they'd sent us throughout this whole process. Sent $50k at 1pm without a second thought.
By 8pm we figured out something was wrong. Spoofed email. Fake instructions. Real money Gone. I already called the bank, filed a police report, and submitted the FBI IC3 complaint, but after reading through this sub I know the chances of getting it back are basically zero. What makes it so much worse is we literally can't afford to buy the house now. The house we've been saving for. It's just... over. I don't even know why I'm posting this. I'm just devastated and need somewhere to put this feeling.
But seriously, if you are closing on anything, call your title company directly and verify the wire instructions over the phone before you send a single dollar. Don't trust the email no matter how real it looks. We thought we were being careful. We weren't. We feel like complete idiots and I know that's not fair but I can't help it right now.
Edit: thank you all, genuinely didn't expect this. Still devastated but this helps.
