I have a 6 year old male neutered indoor cat and no other cats or dogs. I moved with him a few times when he was younger but we've been in a house with my husband now for 4 years. He has always exhibited fear aggression with vets since probably 1 years old (I dont know how he was treated as a kitten because it was covid times and I wasn't allowed to go into vet appointments). Since we moved into this house he occasionally gets set off and becomes aggressive toward us or guests which has been incredibly frustrating. I think ive narrowed down his triggers mostly to construction noises, which we've done a few major renovations and are in the process of our biggest one now. Its obviously impossible to avoid the trigger. When he gets set off he will hiss, growl, snarl, etc. At me or my husband and his pupils become huge and he has a few times now tried to chase after us. It completely disrupts our life, for example today I couldnt get to my home office to be able to work, or get into the kitchen to even get water. I managed to get myself outside with keys and left for most of the day. I cant keep living like this. After the construction noises stop for the day he will go into the hallway that separates our addition area and our main house and just meow incessantly so I know he is upset about what's going on but obviously can't just stop. Please help ive tried all the things - feliway, calming treats, distractions, etc. Sometimes we are able to deescalate by avoiding eye contact with him and acting normal, or distracting with a toy before he really gets to the most worked up state but I obviously get scared if he chases and it becomes a whole situation, that has to be fully reset by us leaving the house for hours usually. I am scared one of these times its going to become physical.
