20% acrylamide monomer spill

Hi everyone,

Working with acrylamide a couple of drops escaped from serological pipet on the tissue.

I think it was max of 50 ul.

When I've asked our technical, she just said to throw if in the waste (no special hazardous waste for acrylamide).

I've packed it throughly in multiple plastics. But now I'm not sure if it was right.

I guess the waste gets burned, but still. What would you do?

Probably a stupid question.

Accidentally scraped old coal-tar on iron. How bad is a one-time exposure to the dust?

Yesterday, a friend of mine used a scraper to clean an old iron bracket from a historic watermill. He only scraped it about two times, creating a tiny amount of dry sawdust-like material on the workbench. It gave off that very distinct, strong tar smell.

After looking it up, we realized the coating is likely old coal-tar. We know this stuff contains PAHs and is considered toxic/carcinogenic with long-term exposure, which caused a bit of panic.

The dust has been sitting still on the workbench in a closed workshop with no wind. Today, it’s being cleaned up safely by spraying it wet with water and wiping it down into a sealed plastic bag using gloves.

Scientifically speaking, how worried should we be about inhaling the scent or being near those few dry particles for a brief moment? Since medical coal-tar shampoos (like Denorex) exist and are applied directly to the skin, I assume a one-time, brief exposure to a tiny amount of dry dust is toxicologically negligible?

Would love to hear some rational, fact-based insights to completely put this to rest. Thanks!

▲ 2 r/ticks

Hi! I've been in the forests for 3 days (south France). Found 3 ticks, one isbigger than the orther two. I can't say when i got them attached. They don't look big. Still the doctor prescribed dox 200 mg because it is unknown when exactly it happend. Can it be that such a small tick was longer than 24 hours?
