Furan protected maleimide help

Howdy, I’m working on a project when I substitute a primary alkyl bromide with a furan protected maleimide. The general protocol is to react with heat in K2CO3. The problem is my SM has a carboxyllic acid on the other side of the molecule so SN2 of the carboxylate is competing with the protected maleimide. Thoughts on getting around this? Too acidic or basic conditions would destroy my maleimide.

Education choices — going into pharma?

Hi,

Sorry for asking this question in such a broad subreddit — I've tried r/biotech and r/pharmaindustry, but because of my low karma my submissions were rejected.

I'm a final-year HS student in central Europe. I've recently uncovered my interest for organic chemistry, and, I must say, I'm addicted 😅. I've made my way through the first 5 chapters of Clayden's handbook for undergraduates, and I'm looking forward to getting to know more.

One particular field that sparked my interest is drug design. It sounds exciting to be able to develop medicines as a job, which gets me to my point:

  1. Pharma as such doesn't exist in my home country.
  2. I'm an EU citizen, so emmigrating within Europe would not be a problem.
  3. A university (in my country) I'll likely apply to has the option for "individual studying". This means that while I would be majoring in chemistry (not ChEng), I could also attend classes on biotech (this would be noted on the diploma).

Is it worth it to take this risky path for the (perhaps elusive) chance of working my dream job in the future? I'm aware that drug design scientists all mostly have PhDs, so I'd have to work some other job beforehand. I've also heard that R&D pharma isn't doing well right now — would they even be willing to hire a foreigner? How much of that even is predictable, given that I will be entering the job market in 6+ years?

...hope that wasn't too much in the way of overthinking 😅. Thanks for your time.

PS: sorry for the wonky wording in some places. The word filter kept insisting I want your help with my homework.

Family shame for wanting to go into pharma?

I’m a rising senior in chemistry wanting to do a phd in organic chemistry and go into big pharma. I currently am in an internship at a well known pharmaceutical company and I absolutely love it!! (Dream job territory)

However, every time I talk to my family, I feel shamed for enjoying chemistry and wanting to work in big pharma. My family is on the whole hippy, supplement/essential oil, chakra cleansing type path. They work in reiki healing, life coaching, etc. As a whole they are very supportive people who have the “you can do everything you put your mind to” mindset, which is great. But I feel a lot of judgement for wanting to work in synthesis.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? It’s tough because they have always been really supportive but not anymore. They believe that big pharma is evil and that we should just live off the land, I guess.

Advice for someone about to start organic chemistry

Hi everyone!

My name is Murat, I'm 13 years old, and I'm from Kazakhstan. I'm preparing for chemistry olympiads, and over the past year I've mainly focused on inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. My long-term goal is to compete for a gold medal at Kazakhstan's National Chemistry Olympiad.

By the end of autumn, I'll have about 1–2 months to build the strongest possible foundation in organic chemistry before it becomes a major part of my preparation.

I'm not looking for a list of reactions to memorize. I'm much more interested in understanding the logic behind organic chemistry.

Looking back, what was the single most important realization or concept that made organic chemistry finally "click" for you?

Hi I'm new here

Hi, I want to know what Organic Chemistry is like in university. Should I invest in a drawing tablet for notes and drawing structures. I have more to ask but I don't know how to without the filter flagging me. Thanks and God bless!

Search for glassware

Hi fellow Labrats,

I am looking to buy more of these glass adapters we use for vacuum filtration on our chemistry lab but it seems almost impossible to find. A lot of the sold adapters have a stem in the middle but that will prevent out stemmed glass filters from fitting inside the joint. I have found some similar glassware but unfortunately those were never for NS29/32 flasks. (Almost all our flasks). If you have any knowledge were to buy this type of adapter please let me know!

I had to synthesise this starting from glycerol and it broke me (Phosphorus is a chiral center)

12 step synthesis with a 0.4% yeild. The stereochemistry of the phosphorus depends on the stereochemistry of the glycerol. Its called pseudo asymmetry. I cried for 20 mintues when I got the LCMS

Advice on bioorganic lab

Hello everyone, I currently started in a bioorganic laboratory. There’s a lot going on very fast. I first want to become very proficient in the art of synthesis, which is expected. As for synthesis, I have covered with multiple books, literature, and other things my primary concern is how do I progress in the area of chemical biology. I have no background in bio Chem although I do have a lot of background in organic chemistry. would it be wise to learn a bit of biochem before diving into chemical biology or should I dive directly into chemical biology considering I have not yet taken a biochem course. please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks in advance!
