Aromaticity related questions process explaination

I dont really understand the first one (prostaglandin question) and this is my friends answer not mine

The second one:

Is it better to write that cyclopropanone has no special stability, while methylcyclopropenone is stabilized due to aromaticity as the carbon of carbonyl is partially positive so it's sp2 hybridized?

chemistry research groups in europe (for an international student)

hi, i am from India and have just finished my master's. i am keen on applying for a phd, and would appreciate any help for the same. i like organic chemistry, but don't want to join a hardcore synthesis lab (idt ive the brains for that too lol). the lab where i did my master's thesis worked on functional organic materials. the focus was to create novel molecules, rather than developing novel synthetic methodology. i am sure this is what i want to pursue for future as well. the gist of my thesis was to impart fluorescence in an otherwise non-emissivse scaffold by synthesising donor-acceptor architecture. i am looking for similar labs actually, something in the domain of organic chemistry and materials chemistry. think frank wurthner, for example. also, my PI was very shitty, extremely toxic. is there a way to ensure that this isn't the case during PhD as well (assuming I'll secure one)?

Synthesis of Loratadine

Does anybody know a good reaction for the synthesis of loratadine ? I tried some research papers but i cant find something to my liking. I need to make a synthesis for desloratadine, i have the one from loratadine to des- , but i dont have the first part. Any ideas, links. Maybe screenshots of the reaction itself.

In your experience, why do undergraduate students find organic chemistry a very hard subject?

I think it's because there is a huge gulf between general chemistry and organic chemistry. Compared to general chemistry, organic chemistry looks almost an entirely different discipline. Most general chemistry courses in my opinion do not prepare students well for organic chemistry.

Is it also bad studying habits by students? If so what would be good studying habits?

Interested in thoughts on this.

Thymol To Propofol Kitchen Synthesis

Synthesis Of Propofol From Thymol

  1. Removal of 5-methyl group from thymol. The 5-methyl group is made into a methyl ester using something such as methyl acetate by reacting it in molar equal amounts with Thymol. This is now oxidized with something like potassium permangeate. Now this is to undergo decarboxylation by heating it in a strong base like calcium hydroxide with a small amount of potassium hydroxide to around 365F for thirty minutes. Next the phenolic oxygen is deprotected using a lewis acid, such as aluminum chloride, or using hydrochloric acid.

  2. 6-isopropylation of above yielded product. This product is put in a solution of a molar equal amount of isopropyl alcohol and titanium dioxide. (Two examples of this same kind of alkylation reaction are in photos, it appears it uses extreme heat for the reaction).

"how to get rid of sulfolane"

I am facing the issue of removing sulfolane from an organic compound. Can experts give me any suggestion to resolve it? My product is not solid, it's oily crude.

Please response me. I'll really appreciate your response.

P-toluensulfonic acid turning purple when heating

I am working with my first dean stark water trap. Was going to make anhydrous P-TsOH to use as a catalyst.

When heating the acid in toluene it turned pink and as heat rose it turned to dark purple. It looked like a lot of it dissolved at around 50 degrees C.

Around 70 degree C the acid started to sublimate and crystallise on the sides of the flask. A lot of the purple impurity stayed undissolved in the rbf.

I have not read about P-TsOH acting this way. I was expecting a slight red layer forming in the toluene.
No water was collected in the trap after heating to almost 110 degree C which is not whats to be expected from the monohydrate.

Anyone know what might cause this? Did the supplier send me something mislabeled? Its definitely an acid since it lowered pH in water.

PCC oxidation of vicinal diols

Will treatment of vicinal diols, specifically a primary and a secondary alcohol, with excess PCC oxidize both hydroxyl groups? For example, if one were to oxidize 1,2-butanediol with excess PCC, would the product be 2-oxobutanal?

Reactivity of Naphthalimide

Dear all,
Having been out of Organic Chem for a while, I came across the following question in my research and I would be curious to hear your thoughts/explanation.

The question is whether I could convert Naphtalimide (A) to

  • an imine (B), by condensation of the carbonyl with a primary amine; or
  • an alkenyl (C), formed by Wittig-reaction of the carbonyl.

Although I feel thermodynamically the products should not be much less stable, I am doubting the feasibility of these reactions due to the protective nature of the imide that hinders the mechanistic intermediates. What are your thoughts? If you also deem these direct reactions problematic, any ways around this?

glassware fix

Hello, I am looking for a science ware glass blower who is able to repair a quartz glass immersion well for photochemistry nearby North Carolina, USA. Or, if it comes to it, anywhere in the USA.

Does anyone know any glassblowers who are able to repair it?

Hydrogen cyanide

Is HCN an organic molecule? I’ve always considered the difference between organic and inorganic carbon molecules to be the presence of H-C bonds, but is the hydrogen-carbon bond in HCN, which is really a weak acid and which dissociates in solution, an organic molecule?

Fisher Projection and R/S help

Hey everyone,

I’m having a hard time figuring out how to draw the fisher projection for this molecule. I’m okay with the Cl dash (into the page), I get thrown off with the other dash.

As for R/S, Cl (priority 1), H (priority 4), CH3 (priority 3), R group (priority 2). I use the double flip method and get S, but I ignore the dash going to the R group. Just focus on the hydrogen wedge and chlorine dash, I’m not sure that this is the best way to approach this problem.

Any help is appreciated, thank you for your time!

Drug Discovery Subreddit

Hi Everyone,

I have noticed that most subs focused on individual sciences, such as chemistry and biology, seem to be quite active and have a lot of good discussions. But it seems like most subs that contain a mixture of disciplines are a lot less active. One of these areas is drug discovery, something I, and I am sure other scientists, are passionate about. With r/DrugDiscovery effectively dead, I have decided to create a new subreddit for this area. Feel free to join if you want to see more drug discovery literature and news, and hopefully some great discussions!

r/DrugDiscoveryLab

Have a great Sunday!
