I saw a play at The Globe Theatre in London. The theatre is built as a reconstruction of the theatre the Shakespeare worked in. Right in front of the stage is standing room. Tickets there are £5 or £10. Behind them is seating, which is much more expensive. We were in £60 seats.

The play was not a success, so there were plenty of empty seats and the standing area was sparsely populated. I think this is the reason many people did not seem to realise they were at a play and not a museum, and lots of phones were out taking photos. The ushers, all volunteers, were quietly going up to patrons taking photos are asking them to stop.

A woman sitting a few rows in front of me started taking photos. The ushers didn't see, and I think the no photo rules is important, so I quietly whispered to an usher so she could have a word. I am comfortable with doing that.

But where I may be the AH? The usher asked me "Has she been sitting there the whole time?" Obviously the usher had already suspected this woman had taken an empty seat she hadn't paid for. I can see why they enforce that; why would you buy a seat in a poorly reviewed play if you can just spend £10 and pick a good one? I didn't want to lie, so I simply answered "No". I'd seen her come up from the groundlings.

The usher then went over and spoke to the woman who returned to the standing area.

I had no problem with the woman being in that seat, I just answered the ushers question honestly, because I didn't think to lie. But immediately thought I should have told a white lie so she could keep her seat.

Am I the AH?
