My wife and I got married this past spring and bought our first home in California a few months later and we've been meaning to sort out the estate planning side of things ever since but between settling into the house and everything else it kept getting pushed to the back burner and now we're finally getting to it.
We're both in our early 30s, there's the house with a mortgage, some savings and a joint brokerage account we've been building up over the past couple of years and no kids yet but we're not ruling it out down the road. Neither of us has a will, no trust, nothing and I'm not even sure where the line is between needing a will versus needing a trust or whether we need both at this point.
I spoke to a friend who went through something messy when her dad passed without a proper estate plan and it scared me enough to finally stop putting this off. I want to get this right the first time rather than having to redo it down the road.
Is a will the right starting point for us or does our situation call for something more?
